XBOX Cancelled Game Pass Family Plan Due to Objection From EA – Rumor

Microsoft seems to have scrapped its plans for a Game Pass family plan. Despite testing the plan in countries like Ireland and Colombia, it won’t be expanding to other regions, and it’s even being removed from the areas where it was initially available, according to reports from Windows Central’s Jez Corden.

It looks like the planned family plan for Game Pass was cancelled, likely because of pushback from some of Xbox’s partners. According to reports, Electronic Arts strongly opposed the idea. This plan would have allowed up to four people to share a single Game Pass subscription.

James Corden explained that the cancellation of the family plan wasn’t Microsoft’s doing. He added that because Electronic Arts (EA) only offers a limited number of games on PC Game Pass and doesn’t release many new titles these days, he’d be okay with EA being removed from the service if it meant bringing back features like a family plan.

According to Corden, EA, a long-standing partner in the Xbox Game Pass program, was strongly opposed to the idea. He added that EA doesn’t fully utilize its Game Pass participation, consistently avoiding releasing native PC versions with features like Play Anywhere compatibility or Xbox achievements.

If that’s the case, I’d prefer EA be removed from Xbox Game Pass and the Game Pass Family Plan brought back. EA doesn’t release many new games these days, and it’s unfair to Xbox customers to limit their options when EA isn’t adding much to the service.

One of the features Xbox players want most – consistently ranking in the top 5 requests – is a family plan for Game Pass. Other popular suggestions include having more exclusive games, improving support for older games, making online multiplayer free, and having separate achievement lists for games and their downloadable content.

Last month’s report showed the company is experimenting with the service, and considering letting subscribers create customized plans to choose the games and features they prefer.

Xbox Game Pass may soon let you customize your subscription. Recent discoveries suggest Microsoft is working on options – codenamed ‘Duet’ and ‘Triton’ – that will allow users to choose the services included in their plan. For example, you could remove Xbox Cloud Gaming to lower the monthly cost, or skip the Fortnite Crew benefits and instead get access to new Xbox games as soon as they’re released. There’s also talk of adding options like subscriptions to World of Warcraft or Minecraft Realms, or even benefits from other services like Netflix, along with the previously rumored Xbox Game Pass Family Plan.
