With the release of Avengers: Doomsday getting closer, Marvel Studios is beginning its marketing campaign, starting with interviews with the film’s directors, The Russo Brothers. The Russos recently discussed their work during an interview at their AGBO studio, celebrating the 10th anniversary of Captain America: Civil War. A lot has evolved in the past decade, and they’re returning to direct Avengers: Doomsday under new conditions. This film needs to demonstrate real depth beyond just impressive visuals to satisfy audiences and prove the continued strength of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Everyone knows Avengers: Doomsday will have more Marvel movie stars in one film than ever before (and that’s no accident!). But what’s still unclear is how the story will bring all these characters together and whether the movie will be truly meaningful and connect with viewers. Interestingly, the directors, the Russo brothers, have revealed that Doomsday and Civil War will actually share similar underlying themes, just presented in different ways.
Avengers Doomsday Is Multiversal Civil War
Anthony Russo recently discussed why Captain America: Civil War remains popular. He explained that both Steve Rogers (Captain America, played by Chris Evans) and Tony Stark (Iron Man, played by Robert Downey Jr.) were characters audiences could understand and connect with, even though they disagreed. The interviewer noted a similar dynamic is now developing in Avengers: Doomsday.
Doctor Doom is set to fight to prevent the complete destruction of the multiverse, while teams like the Avengers, Fantastic Four, and X-Men will be struggling to save their own universes. This situation mirrors a question posed by The Leader to Captain America at the end of Captain America: Brave New World: when heroes from different realities clash, who is truly the villain?
The upcoming conflict is especially complicated because the showdown between two key players will strongly resemble the events of Captain America: Civil War. Robert Downey Jr. is playing Doctor Doom, and Chris Evans is returning as Steve Rogers. It’s easy to predict that the final battle in Avengers: Doomsday will likely be between these two characters, and the directors have suggested a connection between Doomsday and the storyline of Civil War.

Anthony Russo clarified that even with Robert Downey Jr. now starring in Doomsday, the film still focuses on character development. He explained that the characters’ past desires and weaknesses will continue to be explored as the story progresses in Doomsday.
Joe Russo believes Marvel movies can successfully balance standalone stories with the overarching narrative of the larger universe. He argues there’s room for both self-contained films and ongoing, connected storylines, asking, “Why not have both?” He wants viewers to have a variety of experiences and points out that Marvel has excelled at telling long-form stories on a massive scale.
The director described Avengers: Doomsday as a fresh take on the Civil War idea, explaining that Marvel Studios is trying something new with the conclusion of their Multiverse Saga. He believes the film will surprise audiences with its story, style, and themes. “I don’t think people will see it coming,” Russo stated, adding that he hopes it will feel like a natural progression in the ongoing story.
