Super Mario Galaxy Movie: Directors & Cast Reveal Obscure Easter Eggs

Think you caught all the Easter eggs in ? Think again!

Some of the hidden details in the movie are really subtle! In a clip shared with ScreenRant, the directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, producer Shigeru Miyamoto, and the cast talk about some of the hardest-to-spot Easter eggs in The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

One of my favorite hidden details is located in the Gateway Galaxy Starport. There are many secrets to find there, and Miyamoto encourages players to carefully examine each spaceship to see what they can discover.

I’m a huge fan of Shigeru Miyamoto, and he recently let us in on a little secret about the Gateway Galaxy! He says it’s packed with Easter eggs – little hidden references. He suggests really paying attention to each of the spaceships flying around; apparently, you’ll recognize them from other games or maybe even movies! It’s a fun detail that shows how much thought goes into everything he creates.

The game also includes nostalgic nods to the original, with graphics intentionally designed to resemble those from the classic Super Mario on Game Boy.

Aaron Horvath pointed out the background details include departure signs that the art team in Paris cleverly designed to resemble classic Game Boy graphics. As a longtime fan himself, he was thrilled with the result.

You know, as a lifelong gamer, the Minus World is where it’s at for me when it comes to awesome Easter Eggs. It totally throws me back to being a kid, spending hours playing the game for the first time. It’s pure nostalgia!

My favorite Easter egg in the game is definitely the Minus World. The idea of walking through a wall and finding this whole hidden area was just amazing. As a kid, discovering it completely blew me away, and I’ve always loved that feeling of surprise and discovery.

Does the bright, colorful interior of Wart’s Casino look familiar? It actually includes a subtle reference to the game Mario Kart 8, as pointed out by Horvath.

Aaron Horvath mentioned the team drew inspiration for the movie’s neon signs from the Neo Bowser City track in Mario Kart 8.

The casino, located in the underground city of the Gateway Galaxy, is a visually striking place with neon-lit walls. Each wall of the square-shaped room has its own gravity. According to Miyamoto, the design includes many recognizable elements and required a lot of careful work to create.

The movie clearly had a lot of passion put into it. Anya Taylor-Joy, the voice of Princess Peach, explained that including hidden references for dedicated fans shows how much the filmmakers care about the original game.

Anya Taylor-Joy: It’s just done with so much love for the people that make Super Mario what it is.

Chris Pratt, who voices Mario, believes how well you find the hidden Easter eggs likely depends on how much you enjoy the Super Mario franchise.

Chris Pratt says how well you can spot the hidden details will likely depend on how big a Mario fan you are and how familiar you are with the different Mario games over the years.
