Destiny 2 Gets Final Content Update on June 9th as Bungie Works on “Incubating Our Next Games”

After a long period of not sharing updates, Bungie has announced the future of Destiny 2: it’s coming to an end. The game, which first launched nearly nine years ago, will receive its last content update on June 9th.

For nearly twelve years, it’s been an incredible experience creating and sharing the Destiny universe with you. We’ve enjoyed all the challenges, surprises, and successes along the way. Though we still love Destiny 2, we’ve realized that after The Final Shape, it’s time for both the game and the world of Destiny to move forward beyond this chapter.

This basically means the game is no longer receiving major updates. You’ll still be able to play it, similar to the first Destiny, but don’t anticipate any large new features or substantial bug fixes. The studio is now focusing on developing its next projects, starting a “new beginning” with incubation work.

We’re incredibly proud of everything we’ve built with Destiny 2, and the amazing world it’s become. Thanks to all of you, our game universe is huge, filled with years of unforgettable stories, adventures, and triumphs. From the very beginning at the Cosmodrome, through places like the Pale Heart and the Lawless Frontier, we’ve shared incredible memories and built lasting friendships with our players.

We’re so thankful to everyone who shared this experience with us. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts, and we hope to connect with you again in the future.

Although surprising to hear, the lower sales figures for The Final Shape were somewhat anticipated. Despite receiving positive reviews, this expansion – which concluded the ten-year Light and Darkness Saga – reportedly didn’t sell as well as Lightfall, despite that expansion receiving a less favorable reception.

Bungie had to lay off employees and adjust its plans to release two expansions each year, with a greater emphasis on a storyline centered around The Nine. While The Edge of Fate expansion was generally well-received for this new direction, many of the other features it introduced – like the Portal, different levels of gear, and Matterspark – were met with strong criticism from players.

While Renegades showed improvement with additions like the Praxic Blade and more engaging missions, it didn’t significantly change the looter shooter genre. It’s unclear if this news signals Bungie is starting work on Destiny 3. For now, it seems the future for those still playing is uncertain.
