If you’re looking for a powerful space opera, Disney+ has a sci-fi film with one of the most moving deaths you’ll find in the genre. Big movie franchises often include intense action and, when it comes to popular sci-fi, characters frequently meet their end.
I’ll always remember what Iron Man said in Avengers: Endgame – that “part of the journey is the end.” It really stuck with me, especially when you think about all the sci-fi movies I’ve seen. There have been so many characters, big and small, who’ve died on screen, and some of those losses just hurt more than others, you know?
Popular sci-fi movies often feature the deaths of beloved characters. The Star Wars saga, for example, has seen the demise of figures like Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Darth Vader, Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, and Leia Organa. This trend isn’t unique to Star Wars; the Dune films also center around significant loss, specifically the downfall of House Atreides and Paul’s journey for vengeance.
As a sci-fi fan, I’ve been checking out what Disney+ has to offer, and I think Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 really stands out when it comes to movies that pack an emotional punch with character deaths. The best Marvel movies always leave you feeling something when someone dies, and that loss changes the other characters forever. For me, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is definitely one of those films – it has one of the most genuinely heartbreaking deaths I’ve seen in a sci-fi movie.
Yondu’s Death Remains As Impactful 9 Years Later
Released in theaters on May 5, 2017, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 still delivers a powerful emotional impact, especially with the death of Michael Rooker’s character, Yondu. While Yondu became a father figure to Star-Lord, his importance is heightened by the film’s focus on Star-Lord’s biological father, Ego, who is revealed to be a truly awful person—even responsible for the death of Star-Lord’s mother. This makes Yondu’s sacrifice all the more meaningful.
Although flawed, the film beautifully portrayed Yondu’s deep love for Star-Lord, culminating in a poignant moment where Peter finally understood Yondu was his true father figure. Yondu’s ultimate sacrifice – giving his life to save Peter from the vacuum of space – was incredibly selfless. This powerful scene is perfectly capped off by Yondu’s touching and humorous final words: “He may have been your father, boy, but he wasn’t your daddy.” The film handled Yondu’s rare display of vulnerability with care and sensitivity.
Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 4 Could Surpass Yondu’s Death In 1 Way
With James Gunn moving on to lead DC Universe, the story of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy seems to have concluded. However, the team is expected to reappear eventually, as the ending of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 hinted at a new lineup. If they do return in a new movie, the series should continue its tradition of impactful character deaths. The original Groot died in the first Guardians of the Galaxy film, Yondu sacrificed himself in the second, and Rocket’s friends were tragically killed in the latest installment.
Yondu’s death is widely considered one of the most heartbreaking moments in science fiction film, and the most impactful in the Guardians of the Galaxy series. If a fourth Guardians movie happens, Marvel could create an even more powerful emotional moment by having either Groot or Rocket die. As the last two remaining original team members, their loss would be especially devastating. Although a fourth film hasn’t been confirmed, the somber tone established in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 still resonates with fans.
