While HBO Max and Disney+ are known as the main streaming homes for DC and Marvel superheroes, Amazon Prime Video has become a significant force in the genre as well. It was an early adopter with the reboot of The Tick, and has since released popular shows like Batman: The Caped Crusader and Invincible. However, the biggest draw is The Boys and its expanding universe, which will continue with another spin-off next year, despite the recent conclusion of The Boys‘ five-season run.
As a critic, I’m really excited about what Prime Video is building with its superhero content, and their latest offering, Spider-Noir, is particularly intriguing. It’s a live-action series spun off from the Spider-Verse films, and get this – Nicolas Cage is playing the film noir-inspired Spider-Man! The show drops next week, and the initial reviews are in. From what I’m hearing, Spider-Noir could be Prime Video’s next big success – it sounds like they’ve really struck gold with this one.
Spider-Noir Is a Certified Hit on Rotten Tomatoes

As a huge cinema fan, I’ve been following Spider-Noir, and it’s really making a splash! With 24 reviews in, it’s currently sitting at 88% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes – which is fantastic, especially considering how many superhero shows are out there right now. Simon Gallagher from ComicBook put it perfectly, saying it’s a really smart idea executed well, proving Spider-Man can thrive even outside the main Marvel Cinematic Universe. He did mention he wished it had taken even bigger risks, but overall, he praised it as a lovingly crafted tribute to classic noir films.
Critics have praised the series, with Simply Cinema giving it a 9/10 and calling it the most stylish Spider-Man adaptation yet. Collider noted that while Spider-Noir might not appeal to all comic book fans hoping for a darker tone, it’s undeniably entertaining. SlashFilm also awarded a 9/10, highlighting that the successful atmosphere of Marvel’s Noir comics translates well to the show. They described it as one of the most innovative and exciting superhero releases in recent years, playfully calling it both ‘a bit batty’ and ‘the bee’s knees’.
The series didn’t win over everyone. The AV Club, for example, gave it a lukewarm review, calling it a well-intentioned but unsuccessful attempt. Other industry publications were similarly critical, with The Hollywood Reporter describing it as boring and Variety pointing out that it prioritized appearance over meaningful content.
Despite some negative reviews, Spider-Noir still has a respectable approval rating. To put that in perspective, the most recent season of The Boys earned a 93% approval rating (before the final episode aired), and Season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again scored 86%. While not as popular as the highly-rated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (97%) or Spider-Man: No Way Home (93%), Spider-Noir did better than the Amazing Spider-Man films (71% and 51%) and Spider-Man 3 (62%).
Spider-Noir will have a unique release strategy: all eight episodes will start streaming on MGM+ on Monday, May 25th, and then become available on Prime Video on Wednesday, May 27th.
