Batman’s Strangest Animated Series Has Returned

I first saw The Dark Knight come to life back in 1968, through the animated Adventures of Batman series on CBS. Since then, Bruce Wayne’s story has been revisited on TV in all sorts of ways. We’ve had some really dark and serious versions, like Batman: The Animated Series and Batman Beyond, alongside lighter, more playful takes on the character. And speaking of playful, one of the most surprisingly quirky series recently returned for a third season, and it’s bringing in some major DC characters along the way.

I’m really into Batwheels! While you do see Batman and other DC heroes, the show is actually all about the amazing vehicles Batman uses to fight crime. It originally came out on HBO Max in 2022, and it’s aimed at a much younger crowd than most Batman stuff – but it’s still packed with nods to the DC Universe! They just dropped a bunch of new episodes for season three on the streaming service, and I wanted to share what they are:

  • Episode 10: “Presto Change-o”
  • Episode 11: “Caped Crusader Caper”
  • Episode 12: “Aqua-Wheels”
  • Episode 13: “You Talkin’ to Me”
  • Episode 14: “The Butler Did It”

Rev Up The Batmobile

I noticed some cool cameos in the latest episodes – Aquaman and Zatanna both showed up! As of right now, it’s unclear if this will be the last season of Batwheels. HBO Max hasn’t said anything about a fourth season yet. But given how popular Batman still is, I wouldn’t be shocked if the show comes back – it seems geared towards a younger audience, and that’s a good thing.

If you’re new to the world of Batwheels, you might find some of the details pretty interesting! For example, Ethan Hawke—known for his roles in movies like Sinister, Black Phone, Training Day, and The Purge—voices Batman in this series. Longtime DC Comics fans will also be excited to see both new and classic characters show up, including recent heroes like Duke Thomas and Cassandra Cain, alongside favorites like John Stewart’s Green Lantern and Ray Palmer’s The Atom.

After Batwheels premiered in 2022, I had the chance to speak with producer Michael G. Stern about the show’s vision. He explained that one of their biggest goals was to create something for a very young audience while still maintaining the core appeal of Batman. He put it this way: they wanted to keep Batman ‘cool.’ It was a challenge, of course, so they decided to connect the show to younger viewers by introducing a lot of new characters that kids could really relate to, while still keeping the essence of Batman intact.
