Red Dead Redemption 2 Just Broke Another Record Nearly 8 Years After Release

Okay, so I’m still blown away that Red Dead Redemption 2 is still doing so well, even after almost eight years! It hasn’t sold as much as Grand Theft Auto 5 – that game has sold over 200 million copies, which is insane – but RDR2 is a massive success story on its own and just hit another big milestone. It’s awesome to see a game I love still getting recognition!

This week, Take-Two Interactive revealed that Red Dead Redemption 2 has sold 85 million copies. This makes it the third best-selling video game of all time, surpassing Wii Sports. With both Red Dead Redemption 2 and Grand Theft Auto 5 in its catalog, Rockstar Games now has two titles among the top three best-selling games ever, behind only Minecraft.

With its current sales rate, Red Dead Redemption 2 is expected to reach 100 million copies sold, though it might take another two years. To reach that goal faster, Rockstar Games could release the popular western game on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S – something fans have been anticipating for years. A new release would likely result in tens of millions more copies sold and would also improve the game with updated graphics and features.

Right now, Rockstar’s main priority is launching Grand Theft Auto 6, which is scheduled to come out on November 19th. Considering how much anticipation there is for GTA 6, it’s likely to become one of the best-selling games of all time, joining titles like Red Dead Redemption 2 and Grand Theft Auto 5. However, even if it sells extremely well – potentially tens of millions of copies by the end of 2026 – it will probably take several more years for the game to reach the very top of the sales charts.

This week, PlayStation Plus subscribers at the Extra or Premium tiers can play Red Dead Redemption 2 at no extra cost. If you haven’t tried it yet, or want to experience it again, now’s a great time! The first Red Dead Redemption game is also currently available, but it will be removed from PS Plus next month.
