Warning: This article contains spoilers for The Boys’ series finale.
The show The Boys is known for its sharp and often biting humor when it comes to celebrities and public figures. Recently, it even joked about current events, like when a character celebrated the on-screen death of another actor because it benefited their own career. The show has also playfully referenced pop culture moments – for example, recreating a famously awkward celebrity video from the pandemic. Several well-known actors, including Seth Rogen, Charlize Theron, and Will Ferrell, have even appeared as themselves, interacting with the show’s superhero characters.
The show playfully mocked Kendall Jenner’s controversial Pepsi ad and a memorable, yet divisive, scene from Avengers: Endgame featuring female superheroes. The Boys uses a world full of superheroes to satirize how obsessed our society is with celebrities and extreme capitalism, particularly the wealth and extravagance of the richest people, and this often means poking fun at well-known figures.
This week, the hit show The Boys concluded its run on Prime Video. The final battle between Homelander and Billy Butcher was everything fans hoped for, with most characters finding satisfying resolutions and plenty of humor throughout. One particularly funny moment included a clear dig at Elon Musk, the tech billionaire known for his involvement with government projects.
Amazon’s The Boys Takes An Unflattering Shot At Elon Musk
The TV show The Boys has frequently poked fun at Elon Musk. When the show depicted Donald Trump appointing Musk to lead a government agency focused on budget cuts, The Boys’ social media team quickly mocked his comfortable new role. The fictional corporation Vought International announced that the superhero The Deep would also run a government agency, hilariously named the Department of Preserving Earth (DOPE). The spin-off series Gen V even directly referenced Musk when a character tasked Marie Moreau with testing her powers on goats, assuring her they were named after unpleasant people – including one clearly named after Musk himself.
The series finale really leans into its criticism of Elon Musk. As Homelander gets ready to announce himself as a god, he’s bothered by a strange billionaire named Günter Van Ellis, who is clearly based on Musk. Günter, with his cap and attempts at a cool all-black look, has 17 children and considers himself an amateur astronaut – he’s also the world’s richest person, and he expects Homelander to cater to him. Homelander’s advisor, Oh Father, explains that billionaires like Günter are now the most powerful people in America, but Homelander resists the idea of having to impress him.
Okay, so the scene with Homelander and Günter… it’s brutal. He just lifts Günter up, flies him into the sky, and then comes back down without him, casually telling his dad he took an astronaut on a space trip. It’s chilling. This act, the killing of a real-life hero, actually marks his last on-screen kill before Butcher finally takes him down. We’ve watched Homelander rack up a huge body count over the seasons, but this felt different – he wasn’t just killing a bystander, but a genuine, celebrated figure. It really cemented how far gone he was.
Elon Musk & Jeff Bezos Have A Longstanding Rivalry
Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos have been rivals for years, constantly competing to increase their wealth and pursue space exploration. The latest episode of The Boys satirizes this competition, playfully calling Musk an “amateur astronaut” – a jab that could easily apply to Bezos as well. In a darkly comedic twist, the show kills off its Musk character by leaving him to run out of air in space.
It’s doubtful Jeff Bezos was directly involved in this joke, or any of the previous references to Elon Musk in The Boys, but the show does appear on his streaming service, Amazon. The Boys is Amazon’s most popular streaming show, and it’s probably not accidental that it frequently mocks Bezos’s main competitor while avoiding any jokes about Bezos himself.
