Destiny 3 is Not in Development, Bungie Planning “Significant” Number of Layoffs – Rumor

After a remarkable run since 2017, Bungie is concluding live support for its popular shooter, Destiny 2. While new content updates will end on June 9th, the developer hinted at a bright future, stating they are now concentrating on developing their next projects.

It looks like plans for Destiny 3 are on hold for now. According to sources who spoke with Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, the game isn’t currently in development. In addition, the studio is planning layoffs, though the exact number of affected employees isn’t clear.

Bungie is currently proposing ideas for new games, including future installments in the Destiny series, but no projects have been officially approved yet. Jason Schreier reported that Bungie is a costly studio to run, thanks to its location in Seattle and highly skilled employees. While it might seem counterintuitive, Sony probably ordered the recent layoffs to offset significant financial losses the studio has been facing.

It’s become clear, particularly after the postponement of the Destiny 2 Shadow and Order Update (now called Monument of Triumph), that some former Destiny developers are now working on Marathon. While the extraction shooter isn’t currently a massive hit, Sony is optimistic about its potential and remains committed to the project – for now.
