7 Wolverine Facts You Won’t Believe Are True

Wolverine is a hugely popular and recognizable superhero. He began as a one-time villain in a Hulk comic back in 1974, but his unique abilities, look, and tough personality quickly made him a central figure in the X-Men. Now, he’s a cornerstone of Marvel Comics and one of their biggest money-makers. Despite often seeing himself as just a powerful fighter, Wolverine actually has a surprisingly complex and detailed backstory, largely due to his long life and frequent memory loss. Because his history is so complicated, even devoted fans might be surprised by some lesser-known facts about this X-Man.

Wolverine has been reimagined and rewritten so many times over the years that many fans have missed some truly strange details about his history. Here are some of the most unusual facts about the popular X-Man.

7) Wolverine Once Had All the Avengers’ Powers

Besides being a member of the X-Men, Wolverine has also been a long-time Avenger. In the New Avengers comics, issues #5 and #6 specifically, he temporarily gained the abilities of all his teammates. This happened when the powerful being Agomotto attacked the Avengers, trying to take back the Eye of Agomotto from the hero Brother Voodoo. Voodoo challenged Agomotto to a magical duel, choosing Wolverine as the Avengers’ representative. He cast a spell to give Wolverine a fighting chance, allowing him to absorb the powers of heroes like Iron Fist, Spider-Man, Thing, Luke Cage, and Doctor Strange, along with others like Daimon Helstrom, Jessica Jones, and Ms. Marvel. Although Wolverine ultimately couldn’t defeat Agomotto, this temporary power boost made him incredibly strong.

6) Wolverine Killed Almost All of His Kids

Wolverine, being over a century old and having had many relationships, has a surprisingly large number of children. While Daken and X-23 are his most famous offspring, he has many others. A number of these children – including Groundhawk, Shadowstalker, Cannon Foot, Saw Fist, and Fire Knives – were tricked by Daken into forming a ruthless mercenary group called the Mongrels. Wolverine fought and defeated them, only realizing afterward that they were his children. Later, he even killed Daken to end his destructive behavior. Aside from a baby named Erista, Wolverine has ultimately killed all of his biological children.

5) Wolverine Once Had Superheated Claws

Wolverine’s already formidable claws became even more dangerous for a while. After being resurrected in the Return of Wolverine comic series, his healing factor and anger surged to incredible levels. This excess energy flowed into his claws, causing them to heat up intensely when he became enraged – reaching temperatures of 2000 degrees in just seconds. This meant he could not only cut through anything, but also ignite objects and people with a single swipe. Because this ability was so powerful, writers decided it was too much and the heated claws haven’t been seen since, effectively removing the power from Wolverine.

4) Black Widow Was Wolverine’s Student

Wolverine’s incredibly long life – over 150 years – includes a surprising connection to Black Widow. Back in 1937, the villain Romulus forced Wolverine to learn spy skills from a man named Taras Romanov. As payment, Wolverine trained Taras’s young protégé, Natalia Romanov, who would eventually become the Black Widow. To test Natalia and harden her into a ruthless assassin, Taras tasked her with killing Wolverine. She couldn’t bring herself to do it, and Wolverine ended up killing Taras instead. It’s astonishing to learn that Wolverine played a part in training such a famous Avenger.

3) Wolverine Invented Beer

Wolverine has been involved in many important historical events, but one stands out as his most surprising accomplishment. He and Spider-Man were unexpectedly sent back to the Stone Age through a strange portal. Wolverine’s claws impressed the people there so much they began to worship him as a god, and he encouraged them to create beer just so he’d have something to drink. When they returned to the present, it turned out that some of Wolverine’s actions in the past had accidentally caused the apocalypse. Though most of the damage to the timeline was fixed, it was discovered that Wolverine’s role in inventing beer remained unchanged. Essentially, Wolverine can thank himself for the existence of his favorite drink.

2) Wolverine Originally Had Clawed Gloves

Wolverine is famous for his adamantium claws, but that wasn’t always the plan. When he first appeared in 1974 as an enemy of the Hulk, his claws were originally designed as attachments on his gloves. Later, when Wolverine joined the X-Men, writer Chris Claremont decided to emphasize his mutant nature with a more permanent feature. It wasn’t until 1976, in X-Men #98, that it was revealed the claws actually grew from his body. Now, these adamantium claws are a core part of who Wolverine is, which is surprising considering they began as a simple accessory.

1) Wolverine Was Almost a Very Different Type of Mutant

When Wolverine first appeared in The Incredible Hulk #180, his history was largely a mystery – he was simply known as a mutant. Writer Chris Claremont and artist Dave Cockrum, who worked on X-Men, originally envisioned a very different origin for the character. They initially planned for Wolverine to be a literal wolverine, transformed into a human-like form by the villain the High Evolutionary. While this idea didn’t go anywhere, it’s amusing to consider that Wolverine could have started as an actual animal!
