Netflix has been consistently releasing exciting anime series since the start of the year, with titles like Love Through a Prism, Cosmic Princess Kaguya, and Baki-Dou: The Invincible Samurai among them. Even though it’s only the first quarter of the year, anime fans have already been spoiled with great content. The streaming service continues to announce new shows, including Sparks of Tomorrow from the renowned Kyoto Animation studio. Established in 1985, Kyoto Animation is famous for critically acclaimed series like Violet Evergarden and A Silent Voice. Last year, they announced their first adaptation of a Shonen Jump manga, RuriDragon, and in January, confirmed Sparks of Tomorrow. The series was showcased at AnimeJapan 2026, held in Tokyo on March 28th and 29th, alongside over 120 other exhibitors like Aniplex Inc. and Bandai Namco Filmworks. A new trailer, key visual, and release date for Sparks of Tomorrow were revealed at the event.
When Is Sparks of Tomorrow Coming Out?
Starting July 5th, 2026, the anime will be available to watch only on Netflix. While the total number of episodes is still unknown, new episodes will be released weekly this summer. The official website also confirms that episodes will air weekly on Japanese TV channels including ABC TV, TOKYO MX, TV Aichi, and BS11, so Netflix won’t be releasing the entire season all at once.
Minaru Ota, a director known for his work on popular anime like A Silent Voice, Violet Evergarden, and Liz and the Blue Bird, is directing the new series. Luna Goami, praised for her emotional singing, will perform the opening theme, “Eureka Evrika.” The ending theme will be provided by Ginger Root.
What Is Sparks of Tomorrow About?
I recently watched an anime adapted from a highly-regarded light novel series by Hiro Yuki and Kazumi Ikeda. What struck me immediately was the setting – it’s a reimagined Kyoto from the early 1900s, but drastically different from our own history. This Kyoto has become a city choked with grime, smoke, and steam thanks to a huge leap forward in steam-powered technology. It really creates a unique atmosphere.
Kihachi Sakamoto is mourning the loss of his brother and haunted by a puzzling dream, even as the world looks forward to the promise of electricity. Separately, Inaoko Momonkawa is struggling with deep regret following her mother’s passing. When their paths cross, they begin a quest to uncover the mysteries within a rare 20th Century Electrical Catalog, hoping to expose a hidden and troubling secret.
