Martin Scorsese’s Mandalorian And Grogu Character & Secret Star Wars Connections Explained

Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for The Mandalorian & Grogu

A standout new character in The Mandalorian & Grogu has a surprisingly famous voice actor. Director Jon Favreau managed to get legendary director Martin Scorsese to voice a brand-new Star Wars character, creating a role that’s both wonderfully strange and incredibly fun to watch.

Though Martin Scorsese’s cameo in The Mandalorian & Grogu is brief, it’s quite striking. His character also contributes significantly to the story during the film’s second half, giving Din Djarin (played by Pedro Pascal) crucial information and even providing a snack for Grogu.

Interestingly, Martin Scorsese’s first venture into the world of Star Wars shares surprising links with another well-known Star Wars film. Along with other hidden details and Easter eggs, his unexpected role as a character in The Mandalorian & Grogu makes him one of the most enjoyable additions to the story.

Martin Scorsese Plays An Ardennian Fry-Cook On Shakari

In The Mandalorian & Grogu, Martin Scorsese plays the voice of an Ardennian cook who runs a food truck-like business on one of the moons of Shakari – a unique role within the Star Wars universe.

While looking for Rotta, the son of Jabba the Hutt, Din Djarin and Grogu have a quick encounter with a four-armed alien. The New Republic tasked them with finding Rotta for Jabba’s relatives, The Twins, hoping to get information about an Imperial leader in return.

Despite being hesitant and wanting to stay out of trouble, Scorsese’s character eventually agrees to help Din. He first directs Din to Rotta at Shakari’s fighting pits, and later shares information about the criminal activities of Lord Janu, who is secretly an Imperial warlord. Scorsese’s character also makes Grogu a special sandwich – a “flat meat fry” with a surprising sauce made from a mudhorn egg. This is a callback to Din and Grogu’s first adventure in season one of The Mandalorian, where they encountered a mudhorn, inspiring Din’s mudhorn skull symbol. That encounter was also the first time Grogu demonstrated his abilities with the Force.

The egg sauce is a clever and direct Easter egg in The Mandalorian & Grogu, though it’s easy to overlook if you don’t spot the fuzzy mudhorn egg in the Ardennian’s kitchen. But the interesting connections to Martin Scorsese’s new Star Wars character go even further than that.

Scorsese’s New Star Wars Character Is Secretly Related To One Of Jon Favreau’s

Although the film The Mandalorian & Grogu doesn’t mention it directly, the end credits and music listings confirm that Martin Scorsese’s character is named Hugo Durant. This name will likely be recognized by dedicated Star Wars enthusiasts.

Hugo Durant, a four-armed alien from the planet Ardennia as portrayed by Scorsese, is likely related to Rio Durant, the quick-witted Ardennian character who first appeared in the 2018 film Solo: A Star Wars Story. Rio Durant was notably voiced by Jon Favreau, who also directs The Mandalorian & Grogu and has provided several voice performances throughout the Star Wars franchise.

This is a really enjoyable connection between two famous directors now sharing characters in the Star Wars universe, and it’s exactly the kind of clever link and reference that Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni often include in their work. The character’s first name, “Hugo,” is probably a tribute to Martin Scorsese’s 2011 film of the same name.

Though most viewers might not notice, this detail really makes the Star Wars galaxy feel more connected and realistic, giving longtime fans a nice reward without confusing newcomers. It’s already surprising to see Martin Scorsese appear as an alien chef in Star Wars, but combined with these other clever references, Hugo Durant quickly becomes one of the most memorable supporting characters in the film.

The Mandalorian & Grogu is now playing in theaters from Lucasfilm.
