Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced Exists Because Edward Kenway is One of Ubisoft’s “Crown Jewels”

A recent interview with Game Informer revealed how highly Ubisoft regards Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag. Paul Fu, creative director of Resynced, and Nicolas Lopez, an expert on the Anvil Engine, explained that it made perfect sense as the first game the studio would attempt to remake.

Fu deeply admires Edward Kenway, and he spoke highly of both the character and the incredible path he took from pirate to Assassin.

He’s truly exceptional. He’s become a star within Ubisoft, and I think his personal story is fantastic. It’s a really compelling mix of humor, darkness, and sadness, and it’s genuinely touching.

We agree that Edward’s story is powerfully emotional, and we’re still thinking about the song “Parting Glass” as we write this. Lopez explained that the game expands beyond Kenway to explore the Caribbean, allowing them to demonstrate how much the Anvil Engine has improved since it was used to create ancient Japan in Shadows. He also stressed that their experience with ship combat in both Skull and Bones and Assassin’s Creed 3 heavily influenced their decision to create Resynced.

Our studio, Ubisoft Singapore, has a long background in developing water technology, thanks to the Anvil engine, and we’ve also created naval gameplay before. So, working on Black Flag felt like a natural fit – it was the ideal chance to combine our expertise and really take things to the next level.

It’s obvious that Black Flag still holds a special place for both the people who created it and its fans. Resynced is streamlining the story to focus more on Edward, and adding new final missions against a pirate hunter, suggesting we’ll be captivated by the former pirate who surpassed expectations when it releases in July.
