“To me, that is the canon ending” – Monoco actor settles Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 endings debate

Rich Keeble, an actor in the game Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, has shared his thoughts on the game’s different endings, and even playfully suggested which one he considers the official ending.

We recently interviewed Keeble as part of our Arcade Hang series, and the second part of the conversation is now on YouTube. We also discussed his memorable outfits from awards shows.

Spoiler alert! Stop reading now if you don’t know what happens at the end of the game.

As someone who’s played a ton of Expedition 33, I already knew the game has two different ways it can end, and fans will definitely remember that too.

Maelle’s ending allows the player to save everyone by keeping them in a simulated world. However, Verso’s ending reveals the truth, which unfortunately means some characters are lost.

Keeble said his opinion of the endings to Clair Obscur has evolved over time.

When the game first came out, he and some colleagues at Kepler used to joke that Maelle’s ending was the best. They felt it offered a simple, happy resolution where everyone returned and was together, and they couldn’t understand why anyone would prefer Verso’s ending.

Over time, opinions have shifted, and since the game came out, Keeble has encountered many fans with different perspectives. He explained that he’s noticed a growing number of players choosing the ‘Verso’ ending.

I’ve noticed many players replay the game to experience both endings. However, Verso’s ending seems to resonate the most with people, likely because it focuses on moving forward with everyday life – healing and working through challenges.

What makes the game special is that there isn’t one definitive way it has to end. It mirrors real life in a way – things are rarely simple and often messy.

He then described a third possible ending – a funny one. This idea originally came from a Carbot Animations video on YouTube and has become popular with fans.

According to Keeble, one popular ending—introduced by Carbot Animations and nicknamed ‘The Francois Ending’—features Maelle and Verso bickering about how the story should end. Then, Francois unexpectedly steps in and delivers a devastating ice attack. Keeble considers this to be the definitive, or ‘canon,’ ending.

And that’s how it all wraps up. It turns out neither Maelle nor Verso got what they wanted. The story concludes with Francois attacking them both—let’s consider that the official ending, okay?
