DC Comics’ Absolute Green Arrow is a fantastic new take on a classic character. The story picks up after Oliver Queen, the skilled archer and wealthy philanthropist, seemingly died. Now, a new Green Arrow has risen to continue his fight against the powerful and corrupt in the Absolute Universe. While this new hero’s identity remains a secret, it’s already clear that this version of Green Arrow is among the most compelling and dangerous the comic book publisher has ever created.
The first issue of Absolute Green Arrow was well worth the anticipation. It’s a gripping mystery and horror story that takes the classic Green Arrow character in a darker, more intense direction, creating a truly frightening atmosphere. Dinah Lance takes a job protecting a wealthy man, Hector Hammond, and soon finds herself investigating who is trying to harm him. This Green Arrow isn’t the lighthearted hero of legend; he’s a figure that those in power should genuinely fear.
Absolute Green Arrow Is a Killing Machine

The original Green Arrow, created in 1941, was similar to Batman – a hero without superpowers who used his fortune to create advanced technology and weapons. While known for his bow and arrow, he typically avoided lethal force, preferring trick arrows filled with things like tasers, knockout gas, or even boxing gloves to subdue criminals. However, in the darker “Absolute Universe,” Green Arrow is reimagined as a ruthless serial killer targeting the most corrupt and wealthy individuals. His new weapons reflect this deadly approach.
The motto of Absolute Green Arrow is “No Trick Arrows… No Money… No Mercy… What’s Left is the Absolute Hunter.” However, this version of Green Arrow actually does use trick arrows and gadgets – they’re just far more dangerous and unsettling than anything he’s used before. He’s equipped arrows with impact-detonating grenades, and even his regular arrows are terrifying – a single scratch can cause painful hives and bleeding from the eyes and mouth. His bow is also a weapon, able to split into two machetes connected by the bowstring, making him deadly in both close and long-range fights.
Green Arrow is known for both his deadly weapons and his extreme violence. His first target, Jubal Slade – a former business partner and known child abuser – believed his wealth and status would protect him, but Green Arrow brutally punished him for the harm he caused. Though Hector Hammond survived, Green Arrow still inflicted a horrific injury, severing one of his hands. Even in a universe filled with powerful heroes, Green Arrow’s methods are exceptionally brutal.
Absolute Green Arrow Stays True to His Origins

I’ve been following the Absolute Universe, and what really strikes me is how well it gets DC’s heroes. They can really shake things up and reimagine these characters, even taking away everything familiar, but they still feel true to themselves at their core. Take Green Arrow, for example. His usual playful, over-the-top personality wouldn’t fit in this universe at all. But even with all the changes – and some of them are pretty dark, like his willingness to use torture and even kill – they’ve kept what makes him him: a fierce determination to fight for what’s right, go after the powerful people who break the law, and stand up for real-world problems. It’s that core strength that really shines through.
Green Arrow has long been a superhero driven by social justice, using his wealth to champion those society overlooks. His most compelling stories often address real-world issues like racism, lack of funding for essential services, corruption, and environmental damage. The ‘Absolute Universe’ takes Green Arrow’s core beliefs to their natural extreme. Like classic Green Arrow tales, it confronts current, controversial problems, exposing the flaws within the wealthy elite and the government. By portraying Green Arrow as a vigilante willing to use lethal force, the story highlights the anger and resentment felt by those who are marginalized and oppressed by those in power.
It’s worth noting that a deadly Green Arrow isn’t entirely new. In the CW’s Arrow series, Oliver Queen initially operated as “the Hood,” eliminating corrupt figures. Even in the core comic book stories, Green Arrow has occasionally been driven to kill villains he felt needed to be permanently stopped, such as Prometheus and Parallax. However, the Green Arrow from the Absolute Universe is different – he hasn’t yet gone through the typical transformation into a hero who avoids killing. This version of the Emerald Archer has made a firm decision to use lethal force against criminals without hesitation.
Absolute Green Arrow #1 delivers everything fans wanted and surpasses expectations. Packed with thrilling action, compelling characters, and elements of horror and mystery, it’s one of the most captivating and unique Green Arrow stories in a long time. The story cleverly reimagines the hero, stripping away familiar aspects while staying true to his core values. It feels perfectly suited to the Absolute Universe and tackles relevant, real-world issues. This Green Arrow is unstoppable, a force of retribution against the wealthy and corrupt who cause suffering.
