“They’re winning, and we’re not.”
John Bivona of AFM and Kalshi fired back with a rallying cry: “We’re not going to be outspent or out-organized by entrenched interests protecting their monopolies.” Spoken like someone who’s seen a casino lobby meeting and lived to tell the tale.
Congress and Regulators: Because Why Have One Circus?
Meanwhile, Congress is sniffing around Kalshi and Polymarket like a dog that’s found a suspiciously legal snack. House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer wants records over “insider trading risks” and “suspicious trading activity.” Which is rich, given that insider trading is basically Wall Street’s national sport.
The CFTC, ever the drama queen, has taken Kalshi’s side in its legal spat with Ohio over sports-event contracts. FTC Chair Mike Selig is touring courts nationwide arguing prediction markets should be regulated as derivatives, not gambling. Because nothing says “public service” like rebranding slot machines as “financial instruments.”
Federal Regulation: Because Chaos Isn’t Profitable Enough
AFM insists we need federally regulated exchanges, not offshore ones “operating without proper KYC protections.” They also want bans on markets tied to war, terrorism, or assassination. How very noble. Let’s not forget their real priority: making sure you can’t bet on when Congress will finally collapse into a puddle of bourbon and regret.
Kalshi’s Political Chess Game
Kalshi’s expanding its Washington presence like a tech bro buying a Senate seat. Enter Taylor Budowich, former Deputy White House Chief of Staff, now advising AFM. His strategy? “Tell all the truths you can, then deny the rest.”
As prediction markets invade politics, sports, and crypto, the debate rages: Are these financial products, gambling tools, or a new hybrid? The answer, as always, is “it depends who’s holding the cash.”
In the end, this is less about consumers and more about who gets to build the gold-plated tollbooth on the information superhighway. But hey, at least the clowns are well-dressed now.
