Nintendo Breaks Silence on New Super Mario Game

Okay, so Nintendo finally talked about the next Super Mario game, and honestly, it’s been a long wait! It’s been nine years since Super Mario Odyssey came out with the Switch, and everyone just assumed the sequel would be a launch title for the new console. But Nintendo threw us all for a loop and released Donkey Kong Bonanza instead, which meant Mario got put on the back burner. It’s a bit disappointing to realize we’re not getting a new 3D Mario game anytime soon, and definitely not with the Switch 2’s launch. It feels like we’re still a ways off from jumping into a brand new Mario adventure!

Nintendo recently confirmed they haven’t forgotten about a popular game series, thanks to Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of Mario. Miyamoto announced that a sequel to Super Mario Odyssey is planned for the current generation of consoles, though he didn’t reveal when it will be released.

Miyamoto Teases New Super Mario Game

In a recent interview with Casa Brutus magazine celebrating 40 years of Mario, Shigeru Miyamoto suggested that Super Mario Odyssey fulfilled their initial vision for the Switch. He explained that traditionally, a new Mario game accompanied each new console launch, and he’s now eager to see how the development team will approach future innovations.

It’s been six years since the last Super Mario Odyssey and Donkey Kong Bonanza. If that pattern continues, the next Super Mario game might not release until 2031. However, rumors suggest a team was already working on a sequel to Super Mario Odyssey while Donkey Kong Bonanza was being made. If that’s true, we could see the new Mario game sooner, though it won’t be released this year, and 2025 seems unlikely as well. Big Nintendo games rarely leak before release, which is reassuring, but 2027 still feels a little optimistic.

Okay, so the Switch had a good run – eight years! Everyone’s talking about the Switch 2, and honestly, I don’t think it’ll last as long as the original. Looking at how Nintendo usually does things, it might actually be shorter. That means we could see the Switch 2’s lifespan wrapping up in the early 2030s. Knowing Nintendo, they won’t wait until the very end of that generation to release a big, must-have game, so I’m guessing we’ll see something awesome in the late 2020s. But hey, no matter when it drops, Nintendo fans like me will be first in line to grab it!
