Sony Wants to Make PS5 Matchmaking More Interesting, But It Could Lead to Ads

The PlayStation 5’s incredibly fast storage means loading screens are almost a thing of the past. However, you’ll still occasionally have to wait in games, such as when connecting with others for online play.

MP1st recently discovered a PlayStation document from May 21st detailing plans to add picture-in-picture functionality, which will likely enhance the viewing experience on their devices.

This feature displays useful information while the game is paused, such as when players are joining a lobby.

The showcased content ranges from exciting gameplay moments and social media snippets to detailed scouting reports generated by AI – and it also includes advertisements.

My main concern is that console companies are always searching for ways to make more money, and adding advertisements during game pauses feels like a very real possibility.

The patent suggests ads could be interactive, and I can easily picture brands like Domino’s or McDonald’s showing up with links to order food online.

I might be wrong, and they could end up focusing on things like great moments from gameplay. But after following this industry for a while, I have a pretty good idea of what will actually happen.

Fortunately, most patents like this never actually become real products, so this is likely just another idea that won’t go anywhere.
