It’s been seven years since a Star Wars film graced the big screen, and now The Mandalorian and Grogu is here! While fans are thrilled with its return, the story has sparked some questions and worries about the future of the franchise. Star Wars seems to be at a pivotal moment, with several projects potentially on the horizon. These include the next film, Star Wars: Starfighter, slated for release in May 2027, as well as new seasons of Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord and Ahsoka.
After concentrating for years on Disney+ shows, the Star Wars franchise appears to be regaining its direction. With fewer TV series planned and a recent leadership change at Lucasfilm – from Kathleen Kennedy to Dave Filoni and Lynwen Brennan – The Mandalorian and Grogu arrived as a potential preview of what’s next. However, a significant omission in the movie suggests this new direction might be starting off on the wrong track.
Thrawn Doesn’t Appear In The Mandalorian and Grogu

A surprising thing about The Mandalorian and Grogu was how straightforward it was. Unlike many big movies, it didn’t rely on shocking cameos or huge plot twists. The villains shown in the trailer – the Twins, who are related to Jabba the Hutt – were indeed the main threats. While it’s refreshing to see a movie that doesn’t depend on surprises to be engaging, it unfortunately meant a popular fan theory didn’t pan out.
Many fans expected Grand Admiral Thrawn to be the big bad guy in The Mandalorian & Grogu. This seemed likely, as he reappeared in the main Star Wars timeline at the end of Ahsoka season one, and the new movie centers on the New Republic fighting remnants of the Empire – a conflict Thrawn would naturally be involved in as he tries to restore Imperial power. However, Thrawn didn’t appear at all. This was disappointing for viewers, and it also raises concerns about the direction of the story.
Ahsoka Season 2 Essentially Has To Include Thrawn

The second season of Ahsoka has been pushed back and is now slated for release in early 2027, but it’s still expected to be the next official Star Wars story released. The first season ended with the return of Grand Admiral Thrawn, so it’s almost certain he’ll appear in season 2. The new season needs to address Thrawn’s return, especially since Ezra Bridger also came back with him and is confirmed to be part of the story.
It’s great that Thrawn, a fantastic Star Wars character, is returning. However, the news is a bit worrying because of what it suggests about his future in the Star Wars universe. It seems he’ll be limited to being a villain solely within the Ahsoka series, meaning we likely won’t see him as a major antagonist in the broader Star Wars films or other TV shows.
Thrawn Should Be So Much More Than A TV Show Villain

It would be a letdown if Thrawn shows up in the second season of Ahsoka after being left out of The Mandalorian and Grogu, only to not appear in any future films. While season one of Ahsoka was excellent and Thrawn was a standout character – just as he was in Star Wars Rebels – he really deserves to be a major villain in a movie. He feels like a character perfectly suited for a big-budget blockbuster.
Bringing Thrawn into Star Wars films would be a real advantage for the franchise. He’s a refreshing change from typical Star Wars villains because he isn’t a Sith or connected to the Force. Instead, he’s an incredibly skilled military strategist, offering a completely new kind of threat to the galaxy. Star Wars could use a more original villain, particularly after repeatedly relying on Palpatine, even when his return didn’t quite fit the story.
As a huge Star Wars fan, I’m really hoping the people behind the scenes realize how important it is to bring Grand Admiral Thrawn to the big screen, not just keep him on TV. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that Dave Filoni’s rumored ‘Mandoverse’ movie is the way they’ll do it, but we’ll have to wait and see. Honestly, it would be a real disaster if they messed up this character – Thrawn deserves better, and the franchise would be missing out on something special.
