Beware – major spoilers ahead for Rick and Morty Season 9! The latest season of Rick and Morty has begun, and the premiere brought back a fan-favorite villain after a long absence. Season 8 felt like a reset, focusing more on character development and relationships without significantly advancing the overarching storyline that’s been building for ten years.
Season 9 of Rick and Morty is here, and the new season is focusing on ongoing plotlines. Notably, Evil Morty – the show’s biggest villain – has returned after a three-year absence. However, it appears he’s been defeated again, possibly for good this time, and may not be appearing in Rick and Morty for a long while.
Evil Morty Returns in Rick and Morty Season 9 Premiere

The season 9 premiere of Rick and Morty, titled “There’s Something About Morty,” shows that Rick and Evil Morty have been secretly communicating since they defeated Rick Prime in season 7. Over the past few years, they’ve been quietly collaborating on smaller adventures throughout the multiverse. Morty learns about this partnership as they prepare to face a new threat: a monster called The Collective. It turns out Evil Morty has been keeping Rick from going too far.
Evil Morty rebuilt Rick Prime’s dangerous Omega Device, holding a version of the Smith family hostage. This gave Rick the opportunity to destroy the device and escape Evil Morty’s control, leading to a major confrontation. This battle seems definitive, as Evil Morty is completely defeated, unlike in previous encounters.
Will Evil Morty Return in Rick and Morty’s Future?

Rick and Evil Morty have a massive battle, using all their gadgets against each other and holding their own. However, the Smith family joins forces and overwhelms Evil Morty, forcing him to activate a device that pauses time. This is when he realizes why Rick avoids time travel – the Time Cops arrive and arrest him. Evil Morty is then imprisoned by them for an endless, unknown duration.
Rick and Morty finally defeat Evil Morty, achieving both a strategic and emotional win. They discover Evil Morty maintained contact with Rick out of envy for Morty. They declare Evil Morty is finished, and he’s shown imprisoned with no apparent way out. This probably means the end for this recurring villain, though knowing him, he’ll likely find a way to escape eventually.
