As a huge comic book fan, I always found the origin of X-Force fascinating. It all started with The New Mutants, a team of younger heroes Professor X created to train at his school. He wanted to help them learn about their powers and become better heroes. But when the original X-Men went missing, these kids were suddenly thrown into the deep end – way before they were ready! Still, some of the strongest New Mutants really stepped up and managed to take on some seriously tough villains over the years. It’s amazing to see how that initial team eventually evolved into the more hardcore X-Force we know and love.
When Cable became the team’s leader, he transformed them into a more powerful and dangerous group. He trained these young mutants into an active fighting force, and brought in new members willing to use deadly force against their enemies. Here’s a ranking of the original 10 X-Force members, based on their power levels.
10) Feral

Feral first appeared in 1991 in The New Mutants #99 and quickly became a core member of the team X-Force, created by Rob Liefeld and Fabian Nicieza. Her real name is Maria Callasantos, and she’s a Morlock with cat-like powers, including sharp claws and teeth, a grasping tail, fast healing, and enhanced speed, agility, and senses. She began as one of the Callasantos sisters (alongside Thornn) and was recruited by Cable from the streets. Feral excels in close combat, but her powers aren’t effective in all situations. Eventually, she left X-Force and became a villain, joining the New Hellions and meeting a tragic end.
9) Rictor

Julio Richter is known as Rictor, and first appeared in X-Factor #17 in 1987. He was created by Louise and Walt Simonson. Later, in 1992, he became the 10th member of X-Force, joining in issue #15. Rictor can create and direct seismic energy by touching things, causing powerful vibrations that can break steel, shatter stone, and even create small earthquakes. As his powers developed, he gained the ability to reshape the land and control earth and stone without just destroying it. While he has a greater range than Feral, he still needs to make physical contact to use his abilities. Outside of his powers, Rictor is also known for being part of one of Marvel’s most well-known gay couples, alongside Shatterstar.
8) Siryn

Let me tell you about Siryn, a really interesting mutant with a powerful family legacy. She’s Theresa Cassidy, the daughter of the original X-Man, Banshee, and first appeared way back in 1981. I was impressed when I learned she eventually joined X-Force, becoming their ninth member in 1992. What makes her special? Well, she inherited her dad’s sonic scream – and it’s loud, capable of reaching 140 decibels! But it’s not just noise; she can use it to fly and even project focused sonic blasts. Honestly, she’s more powerful than some of her teammates, like Rictor – she can actually shatter steel with her scream and, crucially, she has flight! That combination makes her a serious asset in a fight, and it’s no surprise she quickly rose through the ranks, eventually becoming second-in-command to Cannonball.
7) Domino

Domino’s history in comics is a bit confusing. The first character to appear as Domino in 1991’s The New Mutants #98 was actually an impostor called Copycat. The real Domino, whose name is Neena Thurman, didn’t join the X-Force team until 1992 in X-Force #8, when Cable recruited her. Before that, she was one of the original members of the Wild Pack alongside Cable. Domino has the power to manipulate probability, essentially making her incredibly lucky in any situation. Combined with her skills in shooting and hand-to-hand combat, she’s a nearly unbeatable fighter.
6) Boom-Boom

Tabitha Smith is the mutant known as Boom-Boom. She first appeared in Secret Wars II #5 in 1985, created by Jim Shooter and Al Milgrom. While traveling to the Xavier Institute to seek training from Professor X, she was sidetracked, but eventually arrived and became an original member of X-Force in their first issue. Boom-Boom has the power to create and control plasma bombs of varying sizes – from tiny marbles to large beach balls – each with a corresponding level of explosive force. She’s also been a member of other notable mutant groups like the New Mutants and Nextwave.
5) Shatterstar

Shatterstar is a unique mutant with an unusual origin story. Originally sent to find the X-Men, he ended up with the New Mutants instead. He’s actually Gaveedra Seven, a genetically created gladiator from the future, sent back in time by Arize as part of a rebellion against Mojo V. Shatterstar is incredibly strong, fast, and agile, with expert swordsmanship skills. He has a special ability to send a powerful shockwave through his swords, and can also teleport over long distances. This combination of powers makes him a formidable close-combat fighter, effective in almost any battle.
4) Warpath

Warpath is James Proudstar, brother to Thunderbird (John Proudstar), who tragically died in battle shortly after joining the All-New X-Men. Blaming the X-Men for his brother’s death, James initially rejected Xavier’s school and everything it stood for when his own mutant powers emerged. He first appeared in 1984’s The New Mutants #16, created by Chris Claremont and Sal Buscema, as a member of the Hellions. He later became a founding member of X-Force. Warpath possesses incredible physical abilities, including strength comparable to Colossus, the ability to run up to 100 mph, and greatly enhanced stamina, durability, agility, and reflexes. He’s known for his incredible toughness and has always been X-Force’s powerhouse.
3) Sunspot

Roberto da Costa, known as Sunspot, was one of the original New Mutants and later joined X-Force. He’s best friends with Cannonball and has the ability to absorb sunlight, which gives him incredible strength (up to 50 tons), resilience, and endurance. When fully powered, he can fly at speeds up to 750 mph and shoot blasts of superheated plasma. His powers depend on sunlight, though – if he doesn’t get enough, he’s significantly weaker. Sunspot is also very rich and once even bought the criminal organization AIM, using his wealth to create his own version of the Avengers. Despite his power, he isn’t considered as strong as Cannonball because he needs a full solar charge to reach his peak abilities.
2) Cannonball

Sam Guthrie, known as Cannonball, was an original member of both the New Mutants and X-Force. Cable specifically chose him to lead X-Force missions. Cannonball generates powerful energy that allows him to fly at incredible speeds, and when active, he’s surrounded by a nearly indestructible energy field, making him incredibly resilient. He can also extend this field to shield his allies or trap opponents. There was a hint that he might be an External, a mutant destined for immortality. Thanks to his energy field, he can withstand almost any attack.
1) Cable

Cable, whose real name is Nathan Summers, is the son of Cyclops and Madelyne Pryor. As a baby, he contracted a dangerous techno-organic virus with no immediate cure, so he was sent to the future. There, he was raised as a warrior in a world controlled by the villain Apocalypse. Cable is an incredibly powerful mutant – an Omega-level mutant – possessing strong telepathy, telekinesis, and the ability to interact with technology thanks to implants from the future. He constantly uses his powers to fight the virus that’s slowly consuming him. Visually, he’s known for his cybernetic eye, arm, and shoulder, as well as advanced weaponry and armor. Decades of battling Apocalypse’s forces have also made him a skilled soldier and strategist. His powerful psionic abilities make him the strongest member of X-Force.
