Coca-Cola 600 Winner Daniel Suarez Honors Kyle Busch After Death

Daniel Suarez is keeping Kyle Busch‘s memory alive.

Just three days after Kurt Busch unexpectedly withdrew from the Coca-Cola 600, and shortly before his passing at age 41, the race winner honored his mentor with the victory.

This win is incredibly meaningful to me,” Daniel said after the race on May 24th, speaking with NASCAR. “It’s been a really difficult week. Kyle was a special person.”

Oh my gosh, watching Kyle win was EVERYTHING! He immediately gave all the credit where it belonged – to his amazing wife, Samantha, and their sweet boys, Brexton, who’s eleven, and little Lennix, who’s just four! It was so heartwarming to see him celebrate with them; you could just feel how much his family means to him. Seriously, I was tearing up right along with them!

He dedicated the win to Kyle, as well as to Samantha, Brexton, Lennix, and his entire family. He explained that while every victory feels good, this one was particularly meaningful because of Kyle, and he wanted to make sure Kyle knew it was for him.

In 2015, when Suarez started his racing career, Busch quickly became a strong supporter. They talked on the phone every week throughout that first season.

Suarez told reporters on May 23rd at Charlotte Motor Speedway that he repeatedly asked questions throughout the latter half of the year. He explained he was eager to learn everything he could, absorbing as much information as possible, according to the Charlotte Observer.

He noticed I was improving and we were competing against each other, so he jokingly said he might need to stop giving me advice. But he never actually did, and that meant a lot to me. It really stuck with me how he kept supporting me even while playfully suggesting he shouldn’t.

Fred Busch passed away on May 21st after being hospitalized for a serious illness. His family confirmed to NBC News that he had severe pneumonia which quickly developed into sepsis, leading to life-threatening complications.

Further details emerged regarding his death, including reports that the driver—a highly accomplished figure in racing—lost consciousness while using Chevrolet’s racing simulator the day before. Sources familiar with the situation confirmed this to the Associated Press.

Both NASCAR and the Indy 500 have continued to celebrate the career of Kyle Busch.

NASCAR and the Busch family said in a statement that Kyle was an exceptionally gifted driver, a once-in-a-generation talent, who will be remembered as a Hall of Famer. They described him as a fiercely competitive and passionate racer with incredible skill, and someone who truly cared for the sport and its fans.

“NASCAR lost a giant of the sport today, far too soon,” the statement added. “During this incredibly difficult time, we ask everyone to respect the family’s privacy and continue to keep them in your thoughts and prayers.”
