It Seems Most PS5 Fans Prefer Returnal Over Saros, But It’s Not That Straightforward

Recently, Push Square asked its readers to vote on their favorite game from Housemarque on the PS5: was it Returnal or Saros?

After collecting thousands of responses to our questions, we’ve found some really interesting results.

I’m a big fan of both games, and it’s a difficult choice between them. I especially appreciate Returnal’s intense difficulty and incredibly immersive atmosphere. However, Saros has a slight edge with its gameplay, making it a bit more enjoyable overall.

Looking at the poll, most of our readers enjoyed Returnal more than Saros. Returnal received 43% of the votes, compared to 35% for the newer game.

The next question asked which game has the better overall gameplay, and interestingly, the results are sort of the opposite. 48% of voters said Saros trumps Returnal in this department, while 22% felt the other way.

I think Returnal is a great game already, but the improvements and changes Saros adds make it even better in my opinion.

When it comes to the story, opinions shifted. Half of the participants thought Returnal had the better narrative, while 23% preferred the story in Saros.

This is a tougher one to nail down; personally, I like how Saros retains some sense of mystery, but it makes its themes and story more overt than Returnal does, which is more up my street. However, there’s something about the more abstract nature of Returnal’s plot that sets it apart.

Most people seem to enjoy the story of the first game, and that’s understandable. Likewise, voters prefer Selene as the main character over Arjun, with 66% choosing her compared to 34%.

Generally, Returnal is considered the better game overall, though Saros offers slightly more refined gameplay.

It’s always interesting to see how these things shake out, but I think the main thing we can take away from this is that Housemarque is brilliant and makes brilliant games. Its two PS5 titles are sort of sibling pieces that complement each other very nicely, and really, you can’t go far wrong with either of them in my opinion — it largely depends on your tolerance for starting over from scratch.
