Crimson Desert’s Latest Update Is Better Than Expected

The team behind Crimson Desert released just one patch this week, following two last week. After more than two months of updates since launch, this lack of consistent content is frustrating. It’s hard to see what else they can add beyond a New Game Plus feature, and it makes you wonder if there’s much development happening at all.

Regardless, patch 1.08 is here, and once again, it’s fairly sizable, addressing several long-standing complaints while improving other areas, and adding things that you didn’t even know you wanted. Whether the time to slow down is tomorrow, next week or next month, let’s dive into ten of the biggest changes with this update, starting with one of the most requested…

Dedicated Tool Slot

A long-standing frustration has been fixed: tools now have their own dedicated slot! You won’t have to scroll through a bunch of weapons just to find your pickaxe or other useful tool anymore. They’re now located right below your secondary weapons. Masks and circlets have been moved to the Armor tab, which might make things slightly less convenient for thieves, but it’s a fair trade-off.

The Pond

While having a literal zoo with different pets and farm animals is one thing, it felt incomplete without a place for all the fishies. Rejoice, because you can now construct a pond at the Howling Hill and Pailune Camps. Any fish can be released into the pond – the more of a specific species, the greater their numbers will increase. Legendary Fish can also reside in the pond and won’t be removed under any circumstance, with the caveat being you can only have one (plus you can no longer get rid of them or sell them). If you’ve ever wanted your own personal aquarium or just a place to harvest fish for future meals, then this is a very welcome addition.

New Small Animals and A Baby Wyvern

For players who enjoy collecting creatures, we’ve added 20 new small animal species, including a tiny griffon and a baby Wyvern. The Wyvern is especially exciting – we plan to let you raise it and eventually ride it as a mount in a future update! It feels like we’re entering a “How to Train Your Dragon” phase. Maybe you’ll be able to train the griffon too! If you’ve been wanting to add to your camp’s collection of creatures – like the rabbit-like beings from the Abyss – now’s the perfect time.

Firearms for Kliff

Kliff has gained access to powerful new weapons: muskets and shotguns, giving players more options for building his character. This also benefits his Abyss Gear, which now has a chance to conserve bullets instead of arrows. Players can now rapidly fire shotguns at enemies while dashing without constantly using up ammunition. The developers are considering adding archery skills for Oongka and Damiane, which would complement Damiane’s agility. Both characters also now have access to faster movement with their new Focused Aerial Rolls.

Superior Branches and Instant Refinement

The Sturdy Tree Branch is a unique weapon. While it doesn’t deal a lot of damage, it significantly boosts both attack and movement speed – and these benefits apply constantly, even when the branch isn’t actively being used. This makes it a great choice for players who prefer two-handed weapons, as they’ll receive both speed boosts. Now, you can craft a Superior Branch using either regular or special tree branches once you’ve reached Refinement Level 10. But the biggest change is the new instant equipment refinement feature at the Blacksmith – you no longer need to confirm materials before upgrading!

Re-blockade for Bandit Camps and Ruins

Re-blockading, introduced in patch 1.05 and allowing enemies to reoccupy previously liberated areas, has been expanded. Alongside forts and quarries, you’ll now encounter re-blockaded ruins and bandit camps. There’s still a way to go in terms of adding every major liberated area to the list, but for now, this should further ensure that you never run out of enemies to practice new builds on. Or for attempting Superior Branch-only runs like a madman.

Secondary Keys, Reassigning Inputs and More

We’ve been making a lot of improvements to the user interface, and we’re excited about the latest updates! You can now customize the keyboard shortcuts for important features like Inventory, Skills, Photo Mode (now set to ‘P’ by default), the Map, and the Menu. Plus, you can assign a second key to any input if you want. And a small but helpful change: you’ll only see the option to pet an animal when your cursor is pointed at it, and you can even cancel the prompt by dodging!

Blackstar Improvements

No, the cooldown on Blackstar hasn’t been reduced, nor has its usage duration been lengthened, but look at it this way – at least the camera movement while aiming during flight is improved. The overall controls and camera perspective also feel better, making the actual act of flying that much more enjoyable. If that wasn’t enough, you can now use Blinding Flash on Blackstar, and while this may not seem all that significant, it’s an ideal crowd control tool when you need some breathing room from the enemies on the ground (especially those spamming projectiles).

Raytraced Sun/Moon Light Shadows

The game includes typical visual improvements, like occasional flickering plants and a strange shimmering effect on the ground. The most notable additions are realistic shadows cast by the sun and moon, which work especially well with the new Night Tone Mode – you can find this option in the Graphics settings. Also, a helpful new indicator appears when you place objects on water, making building much easier.

Separate Map Markers for Locations

I’m especially excited about the new map markers! Now, markers will be specific to where you are on the map. This means the mainland and the Abyss will each have their own markers that only show up when you’re viewing those areas. Plus, tracking markers will also appear on the minimap, making it even easier to find your way around.

Okay, so there’s a ton more stuff in this update! Damiane is even scarier up close now – her combos after dodging without weapons are seriously improved. They even fixed the fish traps so you can actually, you know, catch fish! Plus, some of the 2D art has been tweaked to fit the game’s style better, and Kliff’s helmets look amazing. Honestly, it doesn’t even seem like the developers care if we’re happy anymore – they’re just constantly updating Crimson Desert, no matter what, even if it means no sleep or vacations. It’s getting a little worrying, to be honest!

We’ll have another update next week, and honestly, with how things are going, it wouldn’t surprise me if it included a large new area with tons of new bosses. I’m saying that a bit sarcastically, but at this point, who knows what they’ll deliver?
