Fantasy films have given us some huge blockbuster successes over the years. Titles like The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter are particularly famous and consistently popular. While many classic fantasy movies have stood the test of time, not all of them are equally well-made. Because fantasy stories can be so diverse – blending with action, horror, science fiction, and drama – some films just don’t quite come together.

It’s surprising how much money even bad movies can make, but some fantasy films are just exceptionally poor. While there’s no single recipe for a great fantasy movie, these big-budget releases completely missed the mark and are terrible throughout.

Although based on a beloved animated series, the 2010 film The Last Airbender was widely considered a failure. Directed by M. Night Shyamalan, the movie has even been disowned by some of its actors. The initial movie based on Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson books was okay, but the second film was a disaster. Released in 2013, Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters drastically changed the story from the books, frustrating fans and creating a confusing plot that ended the series. The movie was heavily criticized and is now considered one of the worst fantasy adaptations ever made.

2) Alice Through the Looking Glass (2016)

Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland is a classic fantasy story that has been adapted for film many times. Tim Burton’s 2010 version was somewhat unusual but fairly standard, but his 2016 sequel, Alice Through the Looking Glass, was significantly worse. Compared to the first film, Alice Through the Looking Glass is simply dreadful. It drastically changes Carroll’s beloved characters and forces them into a confusing and uninteresting story, making for a truly awful movie experience.

The movie Eragon is often cited as one of the biggest fantasy film failures. Based on Christopher Paolini’s novel, it received overwhelmingly negative reviews, with critics finding fault in nearly every part of the production. Beyond failing to accurately adapt the source material, the film simply wasn’t good on its own merits. It’s considered a poor movie from start to finish and remains a low point for the fantasy genre on the big screen.
