The Best Detective Anime of All Time Just Got a Major Streaming Update (But There’s a Catch)

The Spring 2026 anime season is proving to be full of surprises. While many new series debut each quarter and end up on Crunchyroll – the biggest anime streaming service – Netflix is taking a different route. Netflix continues to invest in anime with both original content, revivals of classic shows, and a select number of new releases every month. They’ve been increasingly involved with brand new anime series and films lately, reflecting the industry’s rapid growth. This April, fans were excited to see exclusive releases on Netflix like the new series from the creator of Gintama, Dandelion, and The Ramparts of Ice.

I noticed some really popular shows like Overlord and Spy x Family recently became available on the platform. And What’s on Netflix just released a list of everything new coming in May 2026. It looks like there aren’t a ton of brand new shows, but fans of Detective Conan will be happy to know new episodes are being added. Since it’s a really long-running series, Netflix is releasing the episodes in seasons – the first two are already up, and season three arrives on May 1st, 2026.

What Is Detective Conan About?

The anime series is adapted from the popular manga Case Closed by Gosho Aoyama, known as Detective Conan internationally. The manga first appeared in 1994, and TMS Entertainment created the anime adaptation in 1996. Though more popular in Japan, the series is starting to gain a following in Western countries thanks to its translation and availability. With over 270 million copies sold, the manga is one of the best-selling of all time, ranking fourth overall.

The story follows Shinichi Kudo, a brilliant 17-year-old detective, while he’s investigating something strange at an amusement park. He’s then attacked and given a poison, APTX 4869, which shrinks his body down to that of a 7-year-old. Now a child, Shinichi tries to keep his true identity a secret as he works to uncover who is responsible for what happened to him and investigate the mysterious organization behind it.

After being transformed into a child, he goes by the name Conan Edogawa and moves in with his friend Ran Mouri and her father, Kogoro, who is a private detective. Because he can’t openly solve mysteries as a child, Conan cleverly uses Kogoro’s voice to make it seem like the detective figured everything out. Over the past twenty years, the series has grown to include 107 manga volumes, more than 1150 anime episodes, and 28 movies.
