Unfortunately, not every great story gets the attention it deserves from an animation studio, and adaptations can take a long time to happen. Manga, a globally popular storytelling medium, delivers fantastic narratives through its distinctive black and white art. However, these stories often have a greater impact when brought to life with animation. Each year, we see hundreds of new anime adaptations, but countless more stories are still waiting for their chance. Anime adaptations aren’t solely based on how popular a manga is; things like budget, studio schedules, and current market trends also play a role. That’s why even some very popular manga from Shonen Jump can take years to be announced as an anime. This list highlights some truly unique and captivating manga – some are likely to be adapted into anime eventually, while others may unfortunately remain undiscovered.
I’m absolutely fascinated by the story of Musashi Miyamoto! It all starts in 16th-century Japan with a really intense young warrior named Takezu Shinmen. He makes it through the brutal Battle of Sekigahara, but that’s just the beginning. He decides he wants to become the greatest swordsman ever, and to do that, he basically reinvents himself as Musashi. What follows is this incredible, often lonely journey where he’s constantly testing his skills against other amazing fighters – like the unbelievably talented, deaf swordsman Sasaki Kojirō. But it’s not just about winning duels; Musashi is really battling his own inner demons, trying to figure out what true strength really means and overcoming all the emotional baggage he carries. It’s a powerful story about self-discovery as much as it is about swordsmanship.
This manga deeply explores themes of personal growth, self-discipline, and finding oneself. Sadly, due to the author Takehiko Inoue’s health, Vagabond stopped publishing in 2015 and hasn’t returned yet, leaving fans eagerly waiting for more. This extended break also makes it harder to create an anime adaptation. While the series had paused before 2015, those breaks were much shorter. Despite the hiatus, Vagabond remains a truly exceptional historical series with stunning artwork and a compelling protagonist, and its story deserves to reach a wider audience through an anime adaptation.
