Reviews are now available for IO Interactive’s 007 First Light just before players with early access can start playing. Currently, the PS5 version has a score of 88 on Metacritic, based on 51 reviews. The PC version isn’t far behind with an 87, based on 24 reviews. These scores may change as more reviews come in.
Critics are already giving the game high marks for its story, writing, and how it plays. They especially love how well it brings the classic James Bond character to life. VGC even called it a potential “best James Bond game ever,” praising the way the developers created a 14-hour adventure that perfectly captures the excitement, humor, action, and romance fans expect from James Bond.
Okay, so The Guardian really loved it too! They said it’s rare for fans to get this much freedom within a game based on something they’re obsessed with, and IO Interactive totally nailed it. Apparently, when it comes to Bond games, nobody’s done it better than this!
Eurogamer wasn’t quite as enthusiastic, stating that First Light wasn’t the James Bond game they’d hoped for from IO Interactive. However, they still enjoyed playing it and acknowledged that IO Interactive has proven themselves capable of handling the Bond license, though in a way that wasn’t initially anticipated. The reviewer suggests Amazon, which owns the rights to James Bond, would be smart to continue working with the studio on future Bond games.
The game is living up to the positive reactions from early previews. People have especially enjoyed the first 13 minutes of gameplay, which show Bond’s life before becoming a 00 agent, and it looks like IO Interactive is on track to deliver a great experience.
Players who purchased the Deluxe Edition of 007 First Light can start playing today, May 25th, at 7 AM Pacific Time on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC. Players who pre-ordered the Standard Edition will automatically be upgraded and can also begin playing now. For everyone else, the game will be available starting May 27th at 7 AM Pacific Time.
