Making Star Wars projects is always expensive, but recently Lucasfilm and Disney may have been spending too much. Huge budgets – hundreds of millions of dollars – have been allocated to films and TV shows, making some of the most costly productions ever. This wasn’t a practical approach long-term, especially for television where they can’t rely on box office revenue to offset costs. Now, with Dave Filoni and Lynwen Brennan leading the studio, it looks like they’re working to get spending back on track.
A recent Forbes article detailed the costs for the upcoming season of Ahsoka, revealing it was 30% cheaper to produce than The Acolyte. According to financial filings from the production company, Robot Dog Pictures, the company spent $33.7 million in the year leading up to February 28, 2025, compared to just $40,676 the previous year. Since Ahsoka Season 2 began filming shortly after that date, these figures likely represent the full cost of pre-production. Costs for actual filming and post-production haven’t been made public yet and will be released in later financial reports. For comparison, The Acolyte had already cost $42.4 million a month before production began.
Has Lucasfilm Finally Solved Its Production Woes?

We don’t yet know how much Ahsoka Season 2 cost to produce, but early signs suggest it was less expensive than The Acolyte. This is good news, considering The Acolyte cost $230 million and was cancelled after one season, despite leaving viewers on a cliffhanger. For comparison, Andor, which aired between The Acolyte and Ahsoka, cost a massive $650 million, and its showrunner, Tony Gilroy, had to fight to get that level of funding.
When Disney+ first launched, it heavily relied on new Star Wars and Marvel shows to attract subscribers. However, Disney realized this strategy was too expensive to maintain. A Disney executive reportedly said the streaming model wasn’t working, as production costs had become unsustainable. This explains why there aren’t any live-action Star Wars series planned after the second season of Ahsoka. Disney and Lucasfilm are now focusing more on making movies instead.
Disney+ is here to stay, which means Lucasfilm will likely continue producing TV series. They’re already working on a second season of the animated series Maul – Shadow Lord. While live-action shows might not be the main focus anymore, Lucasfilm is still open to new ideas, and if Dave Filoni finds a compelling one, it could be approved. Importantly, the studio now seems to be managing TV show budgets more carefully. Ahsoka Season 2 could serve as a model for future projects, demonstrating to Disney executives how creative teams will spend money responsibly and keep costs under control.
Lucasfilm appears to be getting back on track with its movies. The Mandalorian and Grogu was the cheapest Star Wars film Disney has made so far, costing around $165 million. This lower cost makes its box office performance acceptable, and it’s expected to be profitable. While the budget for next year’s Star Wars: Starfighter isn’t known yet, the fact that filming finished in December 2025 – well before its release – suggests production went well. The earlier Disney Star Wars films faced many problems during production, but Lucasfilm now seems to be handling projects more smoothly and efficiently.
