A Day of the Jackal movie is sneaking onto a new streaming service this June.
Originally published in 1971, The Day of the Jackal is a political thriller by Frederick Forsyth about a highly skilled assassin hired to kill French President Charles de Gaulle. It’s been made into several movies and TV shows, including a 1973 film with Edward Fox, a 1997 remake, and a recent series on Peacock starring Eddie Redmayne. Now, one of these films will soon be available on a different streaming platform.
After nearly thirty years, the action thriller The Jackal will be available on a new streaming service in June. The 1997 film, directed by Michael Caton-Jones, centers on an imprisoned IRA member who is freed and tasked with finding and stopping a dangerous, hard-to-catch assassin before they strike again.
After almost 30 years, the film The Jackal (1997) will be available on Prime Video starting June 1st. You can currently watch it for free with ads on Tubi, or rent or buy it on Prime Video and other services for as little as $3.99.
The film The Jackal features a star-studded cast including Bruce Willis, Richard Gere, and Sidney Poitier in his last theatrical film role. It also stars Diane Venora, Mathilda May, J.K. Simmons, Richard Lineback, John Cunningham, Jack Black, Tess Harper, Leslie Phillips, Sophie Okonedo, David Hayman, Daniel Dae Kim, Serge Houde, and a cameo appearance by Larry King playing himself.
I remember when The Jackal came out in 1997. It reminded me a lot of the older film, The Day of the Jackal from 1973, which was a pretty faithful adaptation of Frederick Forsyth’s book. But this newer Jackal movie took a lot more liberties with the story. Instead of following the book closely, it focused on this mysterious assassin, played by Bruce Willis, who was hired by the Russian mafia to try and kill the First Lady. It was a completely different take on the original!
Because of significant changes from the original book and previous film, both director Michael Mann and author Frederick Forsyth wanted to rename the 1997 movie to avoid comparisons. The film received largely negative reviews, earning a 24% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics described it as a simple chase movie that didn’t build much suspense or excitement.
Even though audiences weren’t thrilled with a score of 51%, the movie The Jackal made a lot of money – nearly $160 million worldwide on a $60 million budget. Now, after almost 30 years, it has a good chance of finding a new audience as a popular streaming title on Prime Video, particularly while fans are waiting for the second season of The Day of the Jackal on Peacock.
