The horror film Obsession has quickly become a major hit in 2026, and it’s easy to see why. The unsettling story of Bear and Nikki, and the frightening supernatural wish they make, defied expectations by earning more money in its second week of release than it did during its opening weekend. Naturally, the film’s director, Curry Barker, has been doing interviews to talk about the inspiration behind this wildly popular story. He recently shared that he originally envisioned an even more disturbing ending for Obsession, and he says it’s truly shocking.
Okay, huge warning: if you haven’t watched Obsession yet, turn back now, because I’m about to spoil everything! For those of us who have seen it, wow, that ending, right? Basically, Bear realizes the only way to break the wish that’s making Nikki so obsessed with him is to end his own life – he overdoses on pills. Then, Nikki tries to shoot herself, but the wish is broken at the very last second! It’s just… devastating. She’s left completely alone, having lost Bear and most of her friends, and the movie ends with her just screaming. It’s a really tough watch, but so impactful.
Curry Barker recently told Entertainment Weekly about a much darker ending he’d considered for the film. In this version, Nikki would have taken her own life. Surprisingly, this grim finale was inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Barker explained that they actually filmed both endings – the one that made it into the movie, and the one where Nikki dies. They shot multiple takes of the intended ending, and then filmed a single take of the darker ending just to have it, before moving on.
Nikki Lives

Surprisingly, the decision to have Nikki survive in the story came down to Inde Navarrette’s acting. Seeing her portray the character’s dawning realization of being alive again, and her visibly disturbed reaction to her surroundings, convinced many – including the director’s father – that it would be far more impactful if she simply lived. The director agreed and changed the ending accordingly.
As Clive Barker points out, Nikki felt imprisoned within herself while fixated on Bear, unable to overcome the consequences of her wish. The film shows several disturbing moments where she struggles to break free. Now, viewers are debating: did the movie’s original ending work better than Barker’s proposed alternative?
Which Way, Obsession?

Did Nikki need to die in Obsession? We think the filmmakers made the right choice by letting her live. Her survival adds a layer of mystery to the tragic events and opens the door for potential sequels. Nikki reclaims control of her body, but is left devastated by the loss of her friends. Because of the bizarre nature of the ‘One Wish Willow,’ it’s unlikely the police would believe her story. This raises intriguing possibilities: could she have been imprisoned, or would she try to warn others about the dangers of making wishes? These questions could be explored if the filmmakers decide to revisit this world in the future.
This fits with the film’s story, which consistently showed that Nikki could only escape her situation if Bear died. Bear’s death in the final scene, combined with Nikki waking up startled, is a very impactful moment. The film doesn’t show Nikki fully processing what happened, which allows viewers to interpret events themselves, rather than a straightforward explanation of her shooting him.
