Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced Hangs on to Edward Kenway’s “Spirit and Flavor”, Says Director

I always loved Edward Kenway’s story in Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag. He starts out as a total mercenary, just chasing gold, and it’s fascinating to watch him gradually become a proper assassin. The game director, Richard Knight, recently told GamesRadar that Edward actually begins the game as “a really bad assassin,” which I think is a great way to put it – it really explains his initial motivations and makes his development feel so earned!

He explained that Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced will follow a similar story path. He believes the original Black Flag was so compelling because it didn’t begin with a typical, purely heroic character, and they want to maintain that approach.

According to Knight, the character is making questionable choices – accepting deals with dangerous groups and prioritizing money – all as part of a journey to become a celebrated hero. He emphasized that the original game captured this complex character arc perfectly, and they aim to stay true to it.

Knight clarified that the team aims to preserve Edward’s unique personality and essential story. They plan to update the game with improved graphics and more contemporary gameplay without altering the core narrative.

We want to capture the essence of the original Edward story, staying true to its heart, but delivering it with updated gameplay for a modern audience.

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is coming to PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S on July 9th. According to creative director Paul Fu, while the game will feature significant updates – including entirely new gameplay mechanics and artwork – the core experience will largely remain faithful to the original.

We didn’t really alter the core of the game. We mostly built upon what was already there. We constantly asked ourselves questions to guide development, like whether to include dialogue options or make it a role-playing game. But the clear answer to both was no, so we stayed true to our original vision of an action-adventure game.

Design director Julian Koch explained that the game is getting several updates. These include a new crouch feature, which requires improvements to how stealth works and how levels are built. They’re also adding a parkour system and refining how the game handles collisions with objects in the world.

We’re updating how the character interacts with the environment, starting with things like crouching and adding more visual detail. This also means we need to refine the movement system and how the game handles collisions. The core gameplay will remain the same, but we’re essentially rebuilding everything with more advanced tools and improved mechanics.

One of the biggest differences in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced compared to the original game is the removal of the modern-day story sections that followed Desmond’s crew after the events of Assassin’s Creed 3. According to the developers, interest in that particular storyline had significantly declined recently.

He explained that understanding the fate of Desmond’s friends was crucial initially. However, their goal is to reimagine Black Flag for a modern audience. While the original game remains available, this updated version represents the newest Assassin’s Creed experience, following the events of Shadows. It stays true to the original story but also offers a fresh perspective.
