This summer, fans can look forward to the release of Toy Story 5, bringing back Buzz Lightyear, Woody, and the rest of the toy gang. The new movie will explore how the toys cope with modern technology, as their owner becomes increasingly interested in a new tablet called “Lilypad.” However, the production has hit a snag: the creator of the Cartoon Network show Uncle Grandpa believes a new character in Toy Story 5 is too similar to one of his own.
A new trailer for Toy Story 5 revealed that Bad Bunny will voice a character called “Pizza With Sunglasses.” This prompted Peter Browngardt, the creator of Uncle Grandpa, to post on Instagram, claiming the character is a copy of his show’s Pizza Steve. Browngardt tagged both Adam Devine, the voice actor for Pizza Steve, and Pixar in his post. While we haven’t seen Bad Bunny’s character yet, many people agree the two pizza characters look quite similar, as shown in the post below.
Uncle Grandpa’s History of Controversy
Peter Browngardt, the creator of Uncle Grandpa, has a history of sparking online debate. He recently reacted strongly to the possible merger of Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery – especially after Paramount won the bid over Netflix. Browngardt shared a picture of his popular character, Uncle Grandpa, appearing to be on his deathbed, signaling his disapproval and openly sharing his feelings with fans.
If you haven’t seen it, Uncle Grandpa is a pretty unusual show, even for Cartoon Network – and that’s saying something! It first aired in 2013 and ran for five seasons, ending in 2017. The show even teamed up with Steven Universe for a particularly bizarre and memorable crossover event. While it’s not currently streaming on HBO Max, you can find all five seasons available on Hulu.
While there’s been no word about bringing back Uncle Grandpa, Cartoon Network has had success with revivals like Regular Show: The Lost Tapes and is planning more Adventure Time with Side Quests. The network is clearly interested in revisiting popular shows, so a return for Uncle Grandpa isn’t impossible.
