Emily in Paris’ Pierre Deny Dead at 69 After ALS Battle

The Emily in Paris family is bidding a painful au revoir to a beloved cast member.

Pierre Deny, the French actor who played Louis de Léon in seasons three and four of the Lily Collins series, has died at age 69. His family announced that he passed away on May 25th after a battle with ALS.

Pierre Deny passed away this Monday after a sudden and serious battle with ALS, his daughters announced in a statement to The Daily Mail on May 27th.

In the Netflix series, Deny portrayed the father of Nicholas de Léon (Paul Forman), who was Mindy Chen’s (Ashley Park) friend and later boyfriend in high school.

Deny first started acting in the 1980s, appearing in many French TV shows. He became widely known for his role in a popular romantic comedy series, but before that, he was a familiar face on French television, including a part as Dr. Renaud Dumaze in the drama series Tomorrow Is Ours (originally titled Demain Nous Appartient).

As a longtime observer of the arts, I was so saddened to hear of the passing of this talented performer. Sylvie Vartan, a wonderful actress and singer—I remember her beautifully in Isabelle Margault’s play Ne Me Regardez Pas Comme Ca back in 2015—shared a touching tribute, and it really spoke to the impact he had on those who knew him.

Vartan expressed his sadness over the death of Pierre Deny in an Instagram post on May 26th. He fondly remembered sharing the stage with Deny in a play directed by Isabelle Mergault, describing him as a kind, funny, and talented actor.

Vartan added, “My thoughts are with his family and loved ones at this painful time.”

Luce Mouchel, Deny’s co-star in the show Tomorrow is Ours, also posted a heartfelt message remembering him.

In a heartfelt Instagram post on May 26th, Mouchel mourned the sudden and tragic loss of Dr. Dumaze, remembering their ten years together. She expressed her sympathy for his daughters, praising their strength, and fondly recalled her last visit with him, remembering the light in his eyes. She wished him peace.
