First Look at X-Men 97 Reveals 34 New & Missing Mutants & Undoes Wolverine’s Ending

The first trailer for X-Men ’97 Season 2 has been released! Marvel showed it off at Comic Con Revolution, and it quickly appeared online. The Season 1 finale hinted at a big storyline involving En Sabah Nur, inspired by the classic ’90s “Age of Apocalypse” story arc. As expected, the trailer confirms that plotline and introduces several surprising new developments.

The official trailer for Marvel’s X-Men ’97 Season 2 is here, and it confirms the show will feature time travel. The trailer centers around a dangerous mission to return the X-Men to the 1990s. Fans can expect to see a huge cast of mutants – thirty-two new and returning characters – along with some fun hidden details at the end. We also get a glimpse of Wolverine’s ongoing story, now with newly implanted adamantium, as he exclaims, “We’re back, baby!”

The X-Men’s World is So Much Bigger in X-Men ’97 Season 2

Season 2 of X-Men ’97 is drawing inspiration from classic 90s comic book storylines, including well-loved arcs like “Age of Apocalypse” and “The Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix.” However, it’s also taking on a particularly infamous story. In the comics, Magneto removed the adamantium from Wolverine’s bones, causing a strange animalistic transformation – at one point, Wolverine even tried to revive Cyclops by licking him! The new season is incorporating this animal mutation, but the trailer suggests a different outcome: Wolverine will regain his adamantium skeleton. It seems the show will present this process in a more streamlined way.

I’m so excited about X-Men ’97! What I really love is how they’re bringing in characters from later in the comics, even the 2000s – it totally fits, especially since Season 1 cleverly revisited some huge storylines from Grant Morrison’s run, including the incredibly powerful and heartbreaking Genosha arc. While we didn’t see him in this trailer, another one confirmed that Quentin Quire, aka Kid Omega, is coming! He’s such a cool, rebellious mutant with the potential to become the next Phoenix Host, and I can’t wait to see where they take his story. It’s also fantastic to see familiar faces like X-Factor and Colossus back and playing important parts, just like in the original series.

As a huge Marvel fan, I was really surprised by the show’s dive into the Weapon Plus program! We all know about Weapon X – the one that gave Wolverine his adamantium skeleton – but learning it was actually the tenth attempt at a super-soldier, starting way back with Captain America, is fascinating. What’s even cooler is that X-Men ’97 Season 2 is tackling this head-on, mentioning other subjects like Garrison Kane, Weapon VI, and Fantomex. They’re even hinting that the Winter Soldier (Bucky Barnes) might be connected too, though I’m not sure if that’s just a fun little nod or if he’ll actually show up!
