Star Trek: TNG Star Recalls Infamous Episode Becoming a Cult Hit

The Season 7 episode “Sub Rosa” is well-known for being quite different in style from the rest of the series, and some viewers initially found it jarring. Over time, though, it’s become a favorite among many fans and developed a dedicated following.

Gates McFadden, the actress who played Beverly Crusher, recalls she and Patrick Stewart were initially hesitant about the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode “Sub Rosa” when they first read it. However, McFadden now appreciates the episode as enjoyable entertainment, even its most talked-about scene – a moment described as a “green-eyed orgasm” experienced by her character, Crusher.

Patrick Stewart Wasn’t a Fan of Star Trek: TNG’s “Sub Rosa” Episode

Honestly, when I first read the ‘Sub Rosa’ script, my jaw dropped! Patrick really didn’t like it at all – he thought it was totally ridiculous. And it is pretty out there when you get into it – very gothic and a little bit horror-ish, honestly. But now I totally embrace how wild it is and find it hilarious. I’ve even come to love the whole ‘green-eyed orgasm’ Crusher has – it’s not something you see every day, that’s for sure!

My friend pointed out that I was really going for it with the performance, as if the actress didn’t realize the scene was silly or over-the-top. He said I was treating it like Shakespeare, and that’s what he thought gave it a timeless quality.

The Infamous Star Trek Episode Became a Cult Favorite

In “Sub Rosa,” Dr. Crusher goes to Scotland for her grandmother’s funeral and unexpectedly inherits a strange family heirloom – a candle. This candle seems to be linked to a secret romance from her family’s past. She soon finds herself drawn into a relationship with Ronin, an ancient being who appears through the candle as a supernatural lover.

It turns out Ronin wasn’t a revived spirit, but an alien being without a physical form. Dr. Crusher breaks the candle that had been controlling her, finally breaking free from its power.

Despite initial concerns about filming the episode, McFadden continued to be a part of the Star Trek franchise for many years. After the television series ended, she reprised her role as Dr. Crusher in several Star Trek movies, including Star Trek: Nemesis released in 2002.

More recently, McFadden reprised her role as Dr. Crusher in Star Trek: Picard, allowing her to work with her longtime colleague Patrick Stewart once again. She also provided the voice for an animated version of the character.

Star Trek: The Next Generation is streaming on Paramount+.
