Checking In With Julie Andrews and Her Princess Diaries Castmates

Julie Andrews? Making a rare on-camera appearance? Shut… up!

Despite her condition, a distinguished woman began the annual World Parkinson’s Congress on May 24th with a video message that resonated throughout the Phoenix Convention Center, filling the space with her voice.

The celebrated 90-year-old actor told the audience that their support is incredibly important in the fight against this awful disease. Having seen its impact firsthand, they expressed hope that everyone can contribute to stopping it, and pledged their own commitment to the cause.

And that’s just one project the Sound of Music alum is tackling in this chapter of life.Ā

Last fall, she and her daughter, Emma Walton Hamilton—her only child with costume designer Tony Walton—re-released their 2010 book, The Great American Mousical. The book is about a group of mice who love the theater. She is also a mother to Amy Edwards and Joanna Edwards, her daughters with director Blake Edwards.

The former star of Victor/Victoria hopes her book will inspire children to become interested in theater and attend a show, as she shared with People magazine last year. She also expressed gratitude for the fulfilling second chapter of her life.

After throat surgery in 1997 damaged her singing voice, Julie Andrews began writing children’s books with her daughter Emma. In a 2023 interview with Forbes, Andrews explained, ā€œI think I’d go crazy if I didn’t have something wonderful to focus on.ā€ She added that working on these books with Emma has been a real joy since her surgery.

She admitted in a 2004 interview that the surgery to remove a cyst from her vocal cords caused lasting damage, which was incredibly upsetting. While she deeply missed singing, she found fulfillment in other creative pursuits. She started a publishing company, gave lectures, and acted in films that didn’t require her to sing. She remained as busy as ever, and even felt she was working harder than before, finding great happiness in her new path.

And with that full slate, she’s unlikely to be holding court in Genovia once more.Ā

Although Anne Hathaway, who starred alongside her in The Princess Diaries, hinted that her character Mia Thermopolis might return to the European country for another movie, Julie Andrews doesn’t intend to reprise her role as Queen Clarisse Renaldi.

In a 2022 interview with Access Hollywood, Andrews said a sequel was unlikely. She explained that too much time had passed, both she and her co-star, who now portrays the Queen, were much older, and she doubted the film would be successful.

Hathaway, however, is happily pushing it down the track.Ā

I’m still holding out hope for a sequel! Anne Hathaway has said they’re definitely still working on it, which is amazing. She mentioned in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that when she started revisiting her role as Andy Sachs for a potential Devil Wears Prada follow-up, it became too difficult to juggle that with another project. So, it’s not officially happening right now, but it’s still on the table, and that’s enough to keep me excited!

If you’ve already settled in to watch the third movie, why not pass the time by seeing what the cast of The Princess Diaries is up to now?

Anne Hathaway, who first became known for playing the Princess of Genovia in the 2001 Disney film, has become a highly acclaimed actress. She’s received critical praise – even winning an Oscar – for her roles in movies like Les MisĆ©rables, The Devil Wears Prada, The Dark Knight Rises, and Ocean’s Eight. She still loves talking about her most iconic characters! Recently, while discussing a sequel to The Devil Wears Prada planned for 2026, she also let slip that she’s returning for Princess Diaries 3.

She announced in an October 2024 post that she was returning to Genovia to continue the story, hinting at more magical adventures. She tagged Adele Lim, Disney, and Somewhere Pictures in the post, suggesting their involvement in the project, and wrote, ā€œMiracles happen.ā€

After marrying jewelry designer Adam Shulman in 2012, they had two sons: Jonathan, born in 2016, and Jack, born in 2019.

Even though Mandy Moore played the disliked character Lana Thomas in The Princess Diaries, she’s remained incredibly popular. This is thanks to her successful music career and her critically acclaimed role as Rebecca Pearson in the NBC show This Is Us, for which she received an Emmy nomination.

She’s also known for voicing the Disney princess Rapunzel in the 2010 film Tangled, starring in the Peacock series Dr. Death, and will soon appear in the comedy film The Breadwinner.

She married musician Ryan Adams in 2008, but they divorced in 2016. She then married musician Taylor Goldsmith in 2018, and they have three children together: sons August “Gus” Harrison (born 2021) and Oscar “Ozzie” Bennett (born 2022), and daughter Louise “Lou” Everett (born 2024).

Julie Andrews is a beloved figure in family entertainment. After becoming famous as Queen Clarisse Renaldi, she’s starred in popular movies like Tooth Fairy, Ella Enchanted, Despicable Me, and the Shrek films.

I’ve always been a huge fan of Julie Andrews, of course! Everyone knows her incredible performances in classics like The Sound of Music and Mary Poppins. But what many people don’t realize is that she’s also a wonderful author! I adore her The Very Fairy Princess book series – they’re just delightful and my kids love them!

You probably recognize her voice – she recently voiced Lady Whistledown in Bridgerton!

She married set designer Tony Walton in 1959, with Maggie Smith attending the wedding. They had a daughter, Emma, in 1962, but divorced in 1968. In 1969, she married director Blake Edwards and became stepmother to his children, Jennifer and Geoffrey. They went on to have two daughters, Amelia and Joanna, and shared a 41-year marriage until his passing in 2010. Now, she’s a grandmother of nine and a great-grandmother of four.

Fans will always remember Mia’s friend Lilly, who hosted her own public access TV show called Shut Up and Listen and wasn’t afraid to defend Mia from criticism. Actress Heather Matarazzo continues to work, with appearances on shows like Grey’s Anatomy and Exes & Ohs, and in films such as Hostel: Part II. She recently moved from Hollywood to her wife Heather Turman’s home state.

The actor, who will be in the next season of Wednesday, revealed in a TikTok video from August 2024 that his wife grew up in Michigan. They met in Los Angeles around eight years ago, and about a year and a half ago, they started wondering if they wanted to continue living there.

After hearing a firm rejection, the actress enthusiastically shared how much she enjoyed her time there, praising the beautiful natural surroundings and the kindness of the people she met.

Oh my gosh, Vice Principal Gupta just announced it – Sandra Oh is coming! Even though her part in the movie wasn’t super long, I swear, her lines are legendary – everyone was cracking up! And it’s not just that movie, I’ve been obsessed with her forever! Seriously, Cristina Yang on Grey’s Anatomy was everything, and then Killing Eve? Genius! Plus, she’s Debbie Grayson on Invincible – her voice work is amazing! Okay, okay, I need to calm down… class dismissed, but my fangirling is just beginning!

In 2003, the Emmy-winning star married filmmaker Alexander Payne, but the two divorced in late 2006.

Many fans know Robert Schwartzman as Michael Moscovitz, the supportive friend of Mia in The Princess Diaries. After his time in the Disney film, Robert—brother of Jason Schwartzman—found success as the lead singer of the rock/pop band Rooney. He’s also become a director, with films like Dreamland (2016), The Unicorn (2018), and The Good Half (2023).

He’s also worked as a producer on films including The Last Showgirl, Takin’ Care of Business, and I Live Here Now. He married photographer Zoey Grossman in 2017. They’ve known each other since first grade, and he proposed to her at the location of their childhood yearbook photos. He shared that she’s his best friend, and he couldn’t be happier. In February 2022, they welcomed twin sons, Lennox and Nino.

Remember Mia’s high school sweetheart, Josh Bryant? Erik Von Detten, who starred on Days of Our Lives, later appeared in the 2004 sitcom Complete Savages. He continued to voice the character of Sid in all the Toy Story sequels, up through Toy Story 3 in 2010, and also did other voice and TV work. After a 2008 appearance on Bones, he recently starred in the 2024 TV movie My Acting Coach Nightmare.

Erik and his wife, Angela Von Detten, a real estate agent, have three children: a daughter, Claire, born in May 2019, and sons Thomas (born in March 2021) and Nicholas (born in December 2022).

I’ve always dreamed of having a big family, and that’s a big reason why I stepped away from acting. It just felt too unstable, you know? Thankfully, right as things started to quiet down in my early twenties, I found an amazing opportunity with a finance company when I was about 25. I’ve been there ever since! I started in sales and worked my way up into management, and honestly, it’s been a fantastic fit for me.
