Ex-Forza Horizon Devs Poised to Reveal New PS5 Racer Prior to Sony’s State of Play

Although fans are eagerly anticipating Forza Horizon 6 on PlayStation 5, another racing game might be coming soon as well.

Maverick Games, a new studio founded by former developers from Playground Games, has launched a countdown timer on its YouTube channel, set to end on June 2nd.

The timer will end at 6:00 AM Eastern Time / 11:00 AM British Summer Time, roughly 12 hours before Sony’s State of Play presentation. Whether this timing is intentional remains to be seen.

It’s no surprise that Maverick Games, a studio founded by a director from Forza Horizon 5 named Mike Brown, is developing an open-world racing game.

The studio employs several other talented developers who previously worked on the Forza series, leading to significant anticipation for their new projects.

The studio originally received funding from Amazon, but after Amazon scaled back its game development efforts, the studio had to become self-sufficient. It remains to be seen whether they’ll have enough financial resources to rival games like Forza Horizon.

Interestingly, the game’s developer has brought on Jamie Brittain, the writer from the show Skins, to write the story, and it’s expected to have a strong focus on storytelling.

It definitely sounds like a big goal, since racing games with truly compelling stories are pretty uncommon.

Honestly, I don’t think the recent State of Play had anything to do with this, but I wouldn’t be shocked if Sony decided to jump in and help with the game. It wouldn’t surprise me at all!

While the PlayStation 5 now hosts the Forza Horizon series, it currently lacks a signature racing game besides Gran Turismo 7.

Considering Forza Horizon 5 performed so well on PlayStation, it’s likely Sony and the game developers collaborated on a marketing deal.

All will be revealed next week, either way.
