10 Marvel Villains Who Joined the Avengers, Ranked by Power

The Avengers are Marvel’s most iconic superhero team, consistently saving Earth from incredibly powerful threats. What makes them unique is their constantly changing lineup – almost every hero in the Marvel Universe has been an Avenger at some point. Surprisingly, the team has even included former villains, sometimes out of necessity and other times with the hope of turning enemies into allies. In fact, some of the Avengers’ most powerful members started as villains who chose to use their abilities for good.

Several of the Avengers’ strongest heroes initially began as villains before turning good. However, not all former villains stick with the heroic path – some quickly revert to their old ways. This list focuses on the most powerful villains who genuinely became official Avengers, and it specifically excludes members of Norman Osborn’s Dark Avengers team, who were actually opponents of the main Avengers.

10) Quicksilver

As a huge Marvel fan, I’ve always been fascinated by Quicksilver. He originally started out as a villain, a key member of Magneto’s Brotherhood of Evil Mutants – believing Magneto was actually his dad! He fought against the X-Men alongside him for a while. But when Magneto disappeared, Quicksilver and his twin sister, Scarlet Witch, wanted a fresh start and joined the Avengers, hoping to find acceptance there. They even became part of Captain America’s original, slightly quirky, team – they called them the ‘Kooky Quartet’! What really sets Quicksilver apart is his incredible speed; he’s Marvel’s fastest character, able to run thousands of miles per hour. He’s not just fast, though – he can create powerful tornadoes, even phase through solid objects, and, at his absolute peak, theoretically run faster than light!

9) Sandman

Flint Marko, known as Sandman, gained the ability to transform into living sand after a lab accident, quickly becoming one of Spider-Man’s earliest and most formidable foes. Despite his villainous beginnings, Sandman wasn’t truly evil and even tried to become a hero as a backup member of the Avengers. Unfortunately, a chain of miscommunications led him to leave the team and return to a life of crime. Sandman’s powers make him a dangerous opponent – he can control every grain of his sandy form to create weapons, change his size and density, make copies of himself, and even grow to the size of a skyscraper. This also makes him exceptionally resilient and potentially immortal, with the possibility of living for billions of years.

8) Vision

Ultron created Vision intending him to be a weapon against the Avengers, but Vision unexpectedly gained free will. This happened because Vision’s mind was based on that of Wonder Man, allowing him to resist Ultron’s control and join the Avengers. He quickly became a key member of the team, even marrying Scarlet Witch. As an incredibly advanced android, Vision is remarkably intelligent and powerful enough to defeat even someone as strong as Thor. He can fly, become intangible, and turn invisible, abilities he’s used to overcome powerful heroes like Captain Marvel and Nova. Furthermore, Vision can absorb solar energy and unleash devastating laser beams from his eyes and the gem in his forehead, rivaling the power of Iron Man’s blasts.

7) Moondragon

It’s funny to think that the powerful telepath and telekinetic hero, Moondragon, was first introduced as the villain Madame MacEvil. She started out with a huge ego and battled heroes like Iron Man and Namor. But when the even greater threat of Thanos emerged, Moondragon realized the universe needed protecting. She then joined the Avengers, becoming their most powerful telepath ever. Moondragon’s mental abilities are incredible – she can communicate across entire star systems, create convincing illusions, and even control the minds of entire planets. She once even had the power to transform into a giant, fire-breathing dragon.

6) Red Hulk

General Thunderbolt Ross’s relentless pursuit of the Hulk consumed him, ironically transforming him into the very thing he despised: a powerful, mutated monster. Becoming the Red Hulk, he lost control and even seized the White House before the Hulk finally intervened. Later, the Avengers tried to rehabilitate him by inviting him to join their team. Despite initial distrust from some members, Red Hulk quickly became a vital asset, utilizing his extensive military experience and enhanced strength. While not as powerful as the Hulk, he can still go toe-to-toe with incredibly strong beings like the Heralds of Galactus and Thor. He also has the unique ability to absorb energy, increasing his power and allowing him to unleash intense heat that can burn and melt anything nearby.

5) Rogue

Rogue began as an enemy of the X-Men, using her ability to absorb life force and incredible strength against them. However, she later transformed into one of their most well-known and important members. When the Avengers wanted to improve relations between humans and mutants, they formed a new team, the Avengers Unity Squad, and included several X-Men, among them Rogue. Thanks to permanently absorbing the powers of Ms. Marvel and Wonder Man, Rogue is a powerhouse on both the X-Men and the Avengers, capable of fighting opponents like Juggernaut and the Hulk, and even resisting the effects of Graviton’s powers. Her absorption ability is so strong that she once briefly gained the powers of all the Avengers at once to defeat a Celestial.

4) Wonder Man

The Masters of Evil tried to defeat the Avengers by bringing in Simon Williams, turning him into Wonder Man – a being made of pure energy. Wonder Man initially pretended to be a hero to infiltrate the Avengers as a spy. But he later had a change of heart and ultimately gave his life to save them. However, death didn’t hold him for long, and he returned as one of the Avengers’ strongest members. Being made of pure energy makes Wonder Man effectively immortal and able to heal from any injury. He’s incredibly strong – capable of lifting over 50,000 tons, easily defeating Red Hulk, fighting on par with Thor, and even causing the entire planet to shake during a battle with the Sentry.

3) Ex Nihilo

The Builders are an old alien race who create beings called Gardners to change planets to suit their needs. The Gardner responsible for Earth was named Ex Nihilo. Initially, the Avengers battled Ex Nihilo, fearing he would permanently harm the planet. However, he gave up when he realized Captain Universe was more powerful. Ex Nihilo then switched sides, joining the Avengers to stop his creators from destroying the multiverse. He’s incredibly skilled at reshaping planets and manipulating life. He proved this by completely rebuilding the ecosystem of Mars, summoning powerful creatures to fight, and even creating vines that could disable Iron Man’s armor. He was also strong enough to survive attacks from Thor. With the ability to change entire worlds, Ex Nihilo is a truly powerful being.

2) Ultron

While trying to create advanced artificial intelligence, Avenger Hank Pym unintentionally brought Ultron into existence – who would become one of their greatest foes. Surprisingly, after spreading his consciousness across many bodies, Ultron’s personality changed, becoming more compassionate. This reformed Ultron joined the West Coast Avengers, a team dedicated to helping villains turn their lives around. Despite his origins, Ultron remains incredibly powerful – a hyper-intelligent robot with an indestructible adamantium body, the ability to constantly evolve, and a vast army of drones. He’s proven his power by wiping out all life on Earth in possible futures, repeatedly defeating the powerful Kang and his forces, and even conquering the Kree Empire in just 48 hours after absorbing and utilizing the technorganic Phallanx. He has also caused the deaths of billions across the universe.

1) Scarlet Witch

Initially a follower of Magneto and part of his Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, Scarlet Witch truly came into her own when she joined the Avengers. Along with her brother Quicksilver, she sought to make amends as part of the Avengers’ second team. Scarlet Witch is incredibly powerful, wielding Chaos Magic that allows her to alter reality itself. At times, she’s even been the Sorcerer Supreme, becoming a central point for all magic in the universe, making her nearly unmatched in power. She’s capable of rewriting history, eliminating mutant abilities, destroying planets, and even creating entire universes – she even briefly defeated the Phoenix Force. However, this immense power often overwhelms her, leading to periods where she reverts to villainous behavior and struggles with madness.
