For years, Pokémon fans have said that everyone has a favorite Pokémon. A new website, aptly named ‘Every Pokémon is Someone’s Favorite,’ recently set out to prove this idea. Fans can now declare their favorite Pokémon on the site, and amazingly, every single Pokémon in the Pokédex already has a dedicated fan! This confirms the long-held belief and also gives us a fascinating look at which Pokémon are the most popular.
Okay, so I’ve been checking out the results of a huge Pokémon fan vote – over 257,900 votes as of right now! It’s seriously interesting to see which Pokémon everyone loves the most. As a huge gamer, I had to dig into the data and figure out the most popular Pokémon from each generation, all the way from gen 1 to 9. Here’s what the votes are saying… but the cool thing is, you can still vote yourself if you think a different Pokémon deserves the number one spot!
Gen 9 – Paldea Region Favorite

I was a little disappointed my favorite new Pokémon from Paldea, Lechonk, didn’t make the top 10! But honestly, I’m not shocked that Tinkaton is the most popular. With over 1145 votes, this Fairy and Steel-type Pokémon—the final evolution in its line—easily won. People clearly love it, and it’s significantly more popular than the Pokémon in second place, Clodsire, so it’s likely to stay on top for a while.
Gen 8 – Galar Region Favorite

Overall, Pokemon Sword and Shield haven’t been the most popular when it comes to fan favorites. None of the new Pokemon introduced in those games have received over 1000 votes. Surprisingly, the most beloved of these new Pokemon is Snom – a small, cute, and a little bit strange Ice and Bug-type! It currently has 900 votes, making it more popular than Dragapult, another Pokemon introduced in Generation 8.
Gen 7 – Alola Region Favorite

With Pokemon Sun and Moon, players discovered the Alola region, a tropical area inspired by Hawaii. This game introduced many new Pokemon, including one that has become incredibly popular – Mimikyu! This Ghost/Fairy type is currently considered the most beloved Pokemon by fans, and its touching yet slightly spooky story about wanting to be Pikachu has clearly resonated with people.
Gen 6 – Kalos Region Favorite

The release of Pokémon X and Y brought a new Fairy type to the game, which helped balance things out against powerful Dragon-type Pokémon. This generation also gave us Sylveon, a fan-favorite evolution of Eevee. In fact, according to fan polls, Sylveon is the most popular Pokémon introduced in Pokémon X and Y. It received a whopping 2308 votes, significantly more than any other new Pokémon from that generation.
Gen 5 – Unova Region Favorite

Released in 2010, Pokemon Black and White introduced players to the Unova region and a charming new Pokemon called Litwick. Litwick eventually evolves into Chandelure, which has become the most popular Pokemon from the fifth generation. It’s significantly more popular than Oshawott – leading by over 400 votes currently! So it’s not surprising that The Pokemon Company selected Chandelure to receive a new Mega Evolution in Legends: Z-A.
Gen 4 – Sinnoh Region Favorite

First launching in 2006, Pokemon Diamond and Pearl introduced players to the Sinnoh region. The games quickly gained a dedicated fanbase, and Lucario, a Steel and Fighting-type Pokemon, became a particularly popular choice. With nearly 2,000 votes, it’s consistently ranked among the most beloved Pokemon of all time—and it’s one of the few with two different Mega Evolutions, which isn’t a coincidence!
Gen 3 – Hoenn Region Favorite

Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire are remembered for a lot of things, especially their fun mini-games and side quests. Like every new Pokémon game, Generation 3 introduced a bunch of new Pokémon, and Absol, the Disaster Pokémon, seems to be the most popular. With over 2,200 votes, Absol is currently the 4th most liked Pokémon overall, making it the clear favorite among the new Pokémon introduced in Generation 3 – even more popular than the Water-type starter, Mudkip.
Gen 2 – Johto Region Favorite

I might have done a little happy dance when I saw the results! It’s no surprise that Umbreon, the Dark-type Eeveelution, is the most popular Pokémon introduced in Generation 2. It took me ages to get a plush of it, and Umbreon Pokémon trading cards are expensive, so this makes perfect sense. What is a bit surprising is that Espeon, another new Eeveelution from Gen 2, came in as the fifth most popular Pokémon from that generation.
Gen 1 – Kanto Region Favorite

Surprisingly, Pikachu isn’t the most popular Pokémon from the original 150! While many might guess Eevee or Charizard, a recent fan vote of 2447 people revealed that Gengar, the mischievous Ghost-type Pokémon, is actually the favorite from the first generation. It seems Gengar’s playful personality won over a lot of fans and earned it the title of Kanto’s most beloved Pokémon.
