Tekken 8 Has Finally Given the FGC the Character They’ve Always Wanted

Adding characters from other games to fighting games like Tekken 8 can be tricky. fans often have strong opinions about who should compete in the King of Iron Fist tournament. While some guest characters, like Geese Howard and Akuma, have split the fanbase, and others like Noctis and Clive from Final Fantasy have been met with mixed reactions, the newest addition to Tekken 8 is being almost universally praised. This collaboration is something fans have wanted for many years.

Since the release of Tekken 7, the game has featured characters from other popular media, starting with Akuma from Street Fighter. One of the most surprising additions was Negan from The Walking Dead comic and TV series. This unexpected choice proved that fighting games could be more creative with their guest characters.

Tekken 8 Is Adding Yujiro Hanma As Its Fourth DLC Character For Its Third Season

Yujiro Hanma will be the final downloadable character for Tekken 8‘s Season 3, releasing in early 2027. This addition is special because it brings a character from the popular Japanese manga and anime series Baki the Grappler into the game. Yujiro is actually the father of the main character, Baki, and the Baki series has been running since 1991. Created by Keisuke Itagaki, Baki the Grappler is all about martial arts, making it a perfect fit for the Tekken universe.

Yujiro is a hugely popular character in the Baki series, often considered its strongest. He’s known by nicknames like “The Ogre” and “The Strongest Creature on Earth,” and is feared for his incredibly powerful and adaptable fighting style. Throughout the manga and anime, Yujiro performs feats of strength that are so unbelievable, they’re almost comical.

Yujiro Hanma, the formidable antagonist from Baki the Grappler, has a similarly complicated father-son dynamic to the relationship between Jin Kazama, Kazuya Mishima, and Heihachi Mishima in the Tekken series. He’s set to join Tekken 8 as a playable character after three returning favorites, beginning with Kunimitsu in Spring 2026. While initially slated for Winter 2026, the official trailer confirmed Yujiro will actually arrive in Early 2027.

Fans Have Long Wanted A Collaboration With The Baki Series Across Popular Fighting Games

A crossover between Tekken and Baki the Grappler really surprised fans. For years, fighting game players have wanted to see these two franchises team up, but it never happened. Before the announcement of downloadable content for Tekken 8, the only Baki appearance in a fighting game was in Street Fighter 6, and it was limited to just a few cosmetic items. Many believed a full Baki the Grappler fighting game was unlikely because the series wasn’t widely known outside of Japan.

I gotta admit, I didn’t really know Baki the Grappler until the Netflix anime dropped in 2018. That’s what got a lot of us Western fans hooked on Itagaki’s world. But even before it blew up, Baki always felt like it would make an awesome fighting game. The series is all about martial arts, showing off tons of different fighting styles through its characters. That’s actually super similar to Tekken, which also has a huge roster of fighters who are masters of all sorts of realistic and over-the-top styles.

Bringing Yujiro, a hugely popular character from the Baki series, into Tekken is a great move. Tekken really captures the same intense, competitive spirit as Baki, making Yujiro feel like a perfect fit. He doesn’t seem forced into the game – instead, he’s a natural addition, similar to other successful guest characters in fighting games. Like how horror icons work so well in Mortal Kombat, Yujiro feels right at home in Tekken.

As a long-time Tekken fan, I’ve heard people hoping for a crossover with Baki for years, even though Baki wasn’t super well-known outside of its dedicated fanbase. But with Baki becoming more popular lately, thanks to the manga’s lasting success and fighting games being more open to guest characters, Tekken 8 had a perfect opportunity. I’m so glad they took it – Yujiro Hanma as DLC is amazing!
