Season 2 of X-Men ’97 is coming, and it’s a time-traveling adventure with even more mutant heroes! The first season ended with the X-Men scattered throughout time, and the new trailer reveals they’re heading into the iconic “Age of Apocalypse” storyline – a huge and beloved event in X-Men history.
Season 2 of X-Men ’97 introduces a larger group of characters, and it seems like we might see different versions of them from various points in time. The season also includes a few characters who aren’t mutants, and a connection to the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe’s multiverse storyline with a version of Kang the Conqueror. Here’s a look at all the new and returning Marvel characters featured in the trailer.
32. Rogue

It’s no surprise Rogue is a major focus in the new trailer. As an important character from the original X-Men, she had a complicated relationship with both Gambit and Magneto in the first season. The season ended tragically with Gambit’s death while battling a powerful Sentinel on Genosha, and the trailer clearly shows Rogue is still deeply affected by his loss.
31. Nightcrawler

Nightcrawler, the teleporting mutant, has different origins depending on the version of the X-Men story. In the comic books, he was part of an early team known as the “Second Genesis.” In the animated series, he’s depicted as a survivor from the country of Genosha who later joins the X-Men. Both versions share his strong religious beliefs, which are highlighted in the trailer.
30. Beast

Beast, one of the first X-Men and a brilliant scientist, is a central figure in the team. It’s great to see Hank McCoy back, and fans will be curious to see if he keeps his familiar appearance. The second season of X-Men ’97 will delve into periods where Beast’s mutations become even more pronounced.
29. Bishop

Bishop, the time-traveling mutant, is set to be a key player in Season 2 of X-Men ’97. Because he understands time travel, he’ll likely be the one who tries to bring the X-Men back to the 1990s, and he’ll be working with Forge, whom he knows as “the Maker” from his future. The trailer hints at a storyline focused on Apocalypse called “The Twelve,” and it seems Bishop was an important part of Apocalypse’s plans.
28. Magneto

Magneto’s story in the first season of X-Men ’97 was full of twists – it seemed like he was heading towards becoming a hero, but then his home country was destroyed, turning him back into a villain. Now, with Season 2 taking inspiration from the “Age of Apocalypse” storyline – which featured a Magneto who actually started the X-Men – he’s expected to be a more reliable ally this time around.
27. Jubilee

Jubilee, who used to represent the audience in the original cartoon, is now a powerful character in X-Men ’97 Season 2. She’s struggling with a lot of sadness as more people she cares about are lost, but the story suggests she will eventually rejoin the rest of the X-Men.
26. Gambit

The trailer for Season 2 only features Gambit in past scenes, which isn’t surprising since his character died fighting the Sentinels. However, fans believe he’ll be back, possibly as a version of the comic book character who became Death, one of the Horsemen of the Apocalypse – a storyline the first season hinted at.
25. Boom-Boom

Rogue’s memories briefly show her at a concert with Tabitha Smith, better known as Boom-Boom. In the comics, Boom-Boom is a member of the New Mutants and X-Force, and she’s famous for her rebellious personality and fondness for explosives.
24. Wolverine

As a huge X-Men fan, I can’t imagine a show without Wolverine! And honestly, the Season 2 trailer seemed to hint at seeing him pop up at different points in his life, which is incredibly exciting. We know this season will explore what happened after his big fight with Magneto – specifically, the moment his adamantium was ripped out. It looks like that’s going to trigger a really intense, animalistic transformation for him, and I can’t wait to see how they portray it.
23. Professor X

Charles Xavier, the founder of the X-Men, was also confirmed to return in Season 2. While it’s unclear exactly when or where this powerful psychic will reappear, many believe Professor X is needed back in his own era.
22. Rama-Tut

A group of X-Men find themselves stuck in ancient Egypt, during the early life of Apocalypse. The story reveals Pharaoh Rama-Tut is actually Kang the Conqueror, a time-traveler who was originally set to be the big villain in the Multiverse Saga. This storyline appears to be based on the ‘Rise of Apocalypse’ comic book series.
21. Apocalypse

Season 2 of X-Men ’97 centers around the powerful, ancient mutant Apocalypse as its primary villain. He’s one of the X-Men’s biggest threats, believing only the strongest should survive. The new season draws inspiration from several classic Apocalypse storylines, including the large-scale “Age of Apocalypse,” the less successful “The Twelve” arc, the Rise of Apocalypse miniseries, and The Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix, which featured a bleak future under Apocalypse’s control.
20. Cyclops

Cyclops, the X-Men’s most prominent leader, has been propelled far into the future. This surprising turn of events allows him to fulfill a long-held desire: raising his son, Nathan. The story also hints at other appearances of Cyclops, potentially from different points in time.
19. Jean Grey

In the bleak future ruled by Apocalypse, Jean Grey, the powerful telepath from the X-Men, is alongside Cyclops. Like Cyclops, there are suggestions we’ll see different versions of Jean from various points in time – possibly even the one where she manifested her psychic powers as energy claws to redirect Cyclops’ blasts. And the rumors about her hidden feelings for Wolverine? They clearly still linger.
18. Nathan Summers / Cable

The trailer for X-Men ’97 Season 2 shows Nathan Summers at different ages. This fits with the story, as the time-traveling mutant will be heavily involved in the fight against Apocalypse and will likely play a key role in the season’s events.
17. Polaris

Polaris, who can control metal, is an important character in the second season. The show introduced her as a veteran X-Men member with a past relationship with Iceman, and now she’s working with the team X-Factor. With X-Factor making a strong comeback, Polaris is poised to play a significant role.
16. Iceman

As a longtime X-Men fan, I was so excited to spot Iceman in the background of those photos Polaris was looking at in the X-Men ’97 Season 2 trailer! Bobby Drake was a big part of the original series – I remember his episode, “Cold Comfort” – and now I’m really hoping we’ll see him actually in the new season, not just hear about him.
15. Storm

Ororo Monroe, also known as Storm, was a key member of the X-Men in the comics and the original animated series. The first season of X-Men ’97 highlighted just how incredibly powerful she is, and the upcoming second season promises to further explore her abilities and story.
14. Archangel

The trailer for X-Men ’97 includes a quick glimpse of Archangel, suggesting he’ll be a significant character. It also reinforces a change made to the original series’ backstory: Warren Worthington was originally an X-Man in this timeline. He later fell into the hands of Apocalypse, who performed genetic experiments on him, resulting in his metal wings.
13. Morph

Morph is a character from an animated series known for his ability to change shape. He’s rejoined the X-Men and seems to be working with Wolverine on important tasks – he’s even disguised himself as Deadpool! It remains to be seen if the actual Deadpool will appear.
12. Sunspot

In Season 1 of X-Men ’97, Sunspot and Jubilee developed a strong connection, becoming a romantic pairing. It seems their relationship will carry on in future seasons, and Sunspot is even poised to become a key member of the team’s next iteration.
11. Forge

Forge is one of Marvel’s most brilliant inventors, able to build incredibly advanced technology with ease. He’s famous for developing the time travel technology used by Bishop, and he might be the X-Men’s only hope of returning to the 1990s.
10. Colossus

Colossus is an X-Men character, known as a “Second Genesis” member, who can turn his body into organic steel. He was a frequent character on X-Men: The Animated Series, and will have a significant part in Season 2 of X-Men ’97. The trailer suggests he’s dealing with a loss, probably the death of his sister, Illyana.
9. Exodus

Originally created during the era of the Crusades, Exodus is a very powerful mutant, though he ultimately became more devoted to Magneto. In the Marvel comics, Exodus is strong enough to fight entire teams of X-Men and Avengers by himself. However, the version of Exodus appearing in X-Men ’97 seems to be less powerful, as he’s shown fighting a one-on-one battle with Nightcrawler.
8. Danger

Okay, the trailer gave us a quick glimpse of Danger, and wow, that brought back memories! For those who don’t know, Danger is this super-powerful AI Professor X originally built to test the X-Men – basically, the Danger Room come to life. Things, predictably, went south when she decided she didn’t want to be controlled anymore and tried to take them all out. Eventually, she ended up switching sides and helping the team. It’s really interesting to see them bring her into X-Men ’97, especially now, with AI being such a hot topic. I’m definitely curious to see how they’ll handle her story this time around.
7. Magik

The trailer for X-Men ’97 shows a glimpse of Colossus’s younger sister, Illyana, standing near a memorial—likely for those who have died. In the comic books, Illyana Rasputin died from the Legacy Virus but was later brought back to life. Her story is quite complicated, so it’s unclear if the new animated series will present a simplified version of it.
6. Marrow

Marrow, a Morlock with the ability to grow bone spurs, was once a radical extremist. She later reformed and became an X-Man. A portrait of her now appears among those commemorating heroes who have died.
5. Psylocke

Psylocke, a character with telepathic powers, is joining the cast of X-Men ’97, which is exciting news for fans. It’s currently unclear which version of Psylocke they’ll be using – in the comics, she’s been portrayed as both British and Japanese, all within the same character.
4. White Queen

Emma Frost, also known as the White Queen, is a strong telepath who used to be an enemy of the X-Men, a role she famously played in the original cartoon series, particularly during the “Dark Phoenix Saga” storyline. She’s shown in the trailer, but it’s unclear if she’ll be a friend or foe. Interestingly, in the comics, Emma has actually become a popular and respected member of the X-Men. Her appearance could also create trouble for Cyclops and Jean Grey, as Cyclops once had a psychic relationship with her in the comic books.
3. Quentin Quire

Quentin Quire, also called “Kid Omega,” is a mutant with incredible power who is predicted to eventually become the host of the Phoenix Force. He makes a quick appearance in the trailer, visible in the background of a scene with Polaris.
2. Chamber

Chamber is a mutant superhero who was part of the Generation X team, and has even had a potential romantic connection with Jubilee. He’s known for a particularly tragic backstory – his psychic abilities accidentally created a hole in his chest. Interestingly, like another mutant named Quentin Quire, Chamber can sometimes be seen near Polaris when she’s using her magnetic powers.
1. Penance

Penance is another important character from the Generation X team, and like Psylocke, her history is quite complex. Currently, she’s connected to the story of Monet St. Croix, another member of Generation X. While she’s been seen with Polaris, it’s likely Marvel will clarify her role if she appears beyond a brief appearance.
