Shows like The Sopranos and The Wire from the 2000s, Game of Thrones and Veep from the 2010s, and Succession and The White Lotus from the 2020s are just a few examples of series that have become iconic for their respective decades. However, these are only the most well-known shows – HBO has created countless other fantastic programs, including many critically acclaimed series that have faded from memory, like one that ended just three years ago.
In early 2016, HBO commissioned a pilot episode created by Bill Hader and Alec Berg, generating excitement among fans of the Saturday Night Live star. That summer, HBO approved a full series, and Hader began working on his new show. This project was different from his previous comedic work, like Superbad and Trainwreck, as he aimed for a much darker and more dramatic tone – resulting in the creation of Barry.
HBO’s Barry Ended 3 Years Ago Today
HBO’s critically acclaimed series, Barry, first aired on March 25, 2018. The show centers around Barry Berkman, a professional hitman who wants to leave his violent life behind. While carrying out an assignment, Barry discovers an acting class and becomes fascinated with the world of theater. He develops relationships with both a fellow acting student, Sally Reed, and his teacher, Gene Cousineau, connections that continue throughout the series.
Following a dramatic season finale, Barry came back for its second season in 2019. While the season was well-received and gained even more fans, the show then took a break. Barry season 3 premiered in 2022, and the fourth and final season arrived in 2023.
Season four of Barry sparked more debate than earlier seasons because it took some bold chances with its storyline. Fans who liked it praised how different and inventive it was, moving beyond the familiar jokes and style of previous seasons. The series finale aired on May 28, 2023, bringing the critically acclaimed dark comedy to a close.
The finale of Barry unfortunately didn’t get as much attention as it deserved, as it premiered on the same night as the hugely popular Succession finale. Despite this, Barry is a fantastic show in its own right, and anyone who enjoys crime dramas or dark comedies should absolutely give it a watch now that the complete series is available.
