Netflix is About to Lose all 5 Seasons of a Criminally Canceled Sitcom We All Deserved More of

These days, it feels like TV shows are constantly being cancelled, especially on streaming services. Many platforms have gained a reputation for ending shows before viewers have a chance to fully enjoy them, leaving frustrating cliffhangers and unanswered questions. Luckily, streamers sometimes offer a second chance, bringing back cancelled shows or letting old favorites find new audiences – as Netflix has done with several series. However, all good things must come to an end, and one of Netflix’s funniest comedies, which was unfairly cancelled with its story unfinished, is about to be removed from the platform for good.

From 2016 to 2021, Kim’s Convenience was a hugely popular Canadian show, earning numerous award nominations and attracting a large audience. It was especially praised for its portrayal of Canadian-Korean culture, something star Simu Liu frequently highlighted. Unfortunately, after eight years, all five seasons will be removed from Netflix worldwide on June 2nd. Surprisingly, only the first two seasons were ever released on DVD or Blu-ray. Currently, the only way to watch beyond streaming is to purchase seasons digitally from Prime Video, starting at $9.99 per season. This means it will soon be unnecessarily hard to access the show after it leaves Netflix. Hopefully, it will become available on another streaming service in the future.

Simu Liu Called Kim’s Convenience’s Cancellation “A Slap in The Face”

Actor Simu Liu publicly expressed his disappointment after learning that Kim’s Convenience had been cancelled. In a series of posts, he explained that the cast had hoped for a sixth season, but their efforts were unsuccessful. He felt it was particularly frustrating when producers stated they were unable to find someone to lead the show, as the cast had been actively pushing for its continuation.

Liu also expressed his disappointment with how the show was cancelled, pointing out what seemed like a double standard compared to other sitcoms that received more support. He clarified that the cancellation wasn’t due to low ratings, but rather a deeper issue. He highlighted the show’s predominantly white production team and the potential lost opportunity to create complex, evolving Asian Canadian characters, given the cast’s diverse life experiences. While acknowledging the show’s current popularity, he remains concerned about what could have been.

Following the reaction to his earlier statements, Liu explained to The Hollywood Reporter that he was disappointed to see the show, which had been a Canadian success story, end so weakly. He acknowledged that people had often told him to be more appreciative throughout his career and during the show’s run. While he understood he might have seemed spoiled or entitled, he emphasized that he’d built his reputation on being direct and speaking his mind.
