Outlander stars address ambiguous ending – and reveal show might have ended a year earlier

**Warning – contains full spoilers for the final episode of Outlander**

Caitríona Balfe and Sam Heughan, the leads of Outlander, have discussed the controversial series finale and shared that the show nearly concluded a year before it actually did.

The eighth season concluded with a heartbreaking scene: Jamie (Sam Heughan) was fatally shot, despite having bravely fought and survived the battle of Kings Mountain. Claire (Caitriona Balfe) immediately ran to be with him.

A series of heartwarming moments from their relationship played on screen. The scene then returned to Kings Mountain, where Claire was still next to Jamie, but her hair was now much greyer. They both struggled to breathe, and the episode ended with the credits rolling.

The ending of the show was open to interpretation, which led to a lot of discussion and disappointment among viewers who felt the characters’ stories weren’t fully resolved.

In a recent Variety interview, Sam Heughan discussed the characters’ potential fates, suggesting Jamie might be a spirit – perhaps even a younger version of himself – reaching out to Claire from beyond the living world.

If you examine it carefully, you’ll notice they’re both resting on the magical stone, which suggests they might be in another world.

Balfe explained that everyone naturally has their own vision for how things should go. And, having been with the show since the start and deeply connected to the characters, the cast and crew also have their own specific hopes for what happens next.

I was really surprised to learn during a recent interview that Outlander nearly didn’t make it past season seven! Apparently, Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe’s original contracts were only for that many seasons, which meant the show’s future was uncertain until those were renegotiated. It’s amazing to think how close we were to saying goodbye to Jamie and Claire much sooner!

Balfe explained that rushing the ending felt wrong. They wanted to give the story the thoughtful conclusion it deserved and properly bid farewell to the characters and their journey.

Heughan added: “When we got to the end of [Season] 7, it just didn’t feel satisfying.”

Outlander is available to stream on MGM+ now.

Before TopMob, she honed her skills with some impressive publications – I’m talking The Guardian, The Times, and even The Sun Online – and she clearly brought that experience with her. She’s got a solid journalism background too, with an MA to back it up, which you can definitely see in her writing.
