Lord of the Rings icon joins The Legend of Vox Machina season 4 in top secret new role

Andy Serkis, known for playing Gollum in The Lord of the Rings, will appear in season 4 of The Legend of Vox Machina, though his character hasn’t been revealed yet.

The fourth season of the show—a spin-off from the popular web series Critical Role, which itself is based on Dungeons & Dragons—will premiere on Prime Video on June 3rd. It follows the exciting adventures of a diverse group of mercenaries.

Matt Mercer, Sam Riegel, and the entire Critical Role team announced the casting details in a video posted on Instagram.

Riegel announced the exciting news that Andy Serkis is joining the cast of The Legend of Vox Machina season 4, playfully revealing a t-shirt with Serkis’s face on it as he took off another shirt. He also joked about adding the shirt to his collection.

Mercer added: “Watch the show to see who he plays.”

Andy Serkis is famous for his role as Gollum in Peter Jackson’s “Lord of the Rings” films. He’s preparing to revisit that character – and Middle-earth – again in 2027 with “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt of Gollum,” a new film he will also direct.

He’s also famous for his roles as Supreme Leader Snoke in the newer Star Wars films and Caesar in the recent Planet of the Apes movies.

As a film buff, I’ve always enjoyed Andy Serkis’ work. You probably know him from roles like Alfred in The Batman or Ulysses Klaue in the Marvel Cinematic Universe – he’s fantastic in both! He’s also been in fun films like Long Shot and SAS: Red Notice. But he doesn’t just act – he directs too! I really liked his work on Breathe and, of course, Venom: Let There Be Carnage.

Season 4 of The Legend of Vox Machina will begin a year after the events of season 3. The previous season ended with massive destruction caused by the Chroma Conclave and a dangerous hunt for Vox Machina led by the Cider King, culminating in the unexpected death of a key character.

At the start of season 4, the main characters are all in different parts of the world. But when a new villain emerges and puts everyone in danger, they quickly come back together to fight it.

The Legend of Vox Machina season 4 will premiere on Prime Video on 3 June 2026.

You can now watch all three seasons of The Legend of Vox Machina on Prime Video. New subscribers can start a free 30-day trial to begin streaming.
