Sony has been steadily making its ‘State of Play’ presentations more significant, and the February 2026 broadcast was the most popular one yet. Now, the question is whether next week’s presentation can top that record.
So, the company that makes my console is doing its big summer livestream on June 2nd, and everyone’s saying it’s going to be huge! I’m super hyped to see what they announce.
The manufacturer announced the event weeks ahead of time, which is unusual for State of Play presentations – these are typically only confirmed a few days before they happen. They’ve also announced that the pre-recorded broadcast will be shown in theaters across the United States.
The one-hour show is expected to begin with a focus on Marvel’s Wolverine, which is sure to draw a lot of viewers. There’s also a lot of speculation about other potential reveals, ranging from a new God of War game to Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.
A key benefit for State of Play is that it happens around the same time as the Summer Game Fest, when gamers are already expecting major gaming announcements. With E3 no longer running, this week is when players naturally turn their attention to gaming news, and State of Play benefits from that existing excitement.
It’s wise to be realistic, but Sony seems likely to significantly outperform its previous State of Play presentation.
As mentioned earlier, the February 2026 livestream had 3.4 million views, making it the fifth most-watched PlayStation presentation, behind only the two original PS5 reveal livestreams and the 2021 and 2023 PlayStation Showcases. I believe this upcoming State of Play will likely surpass at least one of those in viewership.
Many people won’t watch these events live, and will instead find out about games like Marvel’s Wolverine through trailers released later. Plus, viewers are spread across many different social media sites and live streams.
The same warning applies to everything we’ve just discussed, so we’re making a fair comparison.
Sony’s State of Play presentations have really hit their stride. It took a while for them to generate the same level of excitement as events like Nintendo Direct or PlayStation Showcase, but they’ve finally reached that point. I expect next week’s presentation will break all previous viewership records.
