Although Final Fantasy 7 is part of a bigger series, its own world and story are so expansive that it feels like a franchise on its own. It has spawned numerous spin-off games, movies, and other related content, and is now being reimagined in a series of three remake games that continue Cloud and Avalanche’s adventure.
Looking for a way to follow the complete story of Final Fantasy 7? Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis is a great option. This free-to-play mobile game, released in 2023, retells the entire saga, including the original 1998 game, Crisis Core, and additional storylines.
Square Enix has now revisited the story of Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy 7, a spin-off game originally released for the PlayStation 2 in 2006. For those unfamiliar, Dirge of Cerberus is a third-person shooter starring Vincent, and its story picks up several years after Final Fantasy 7 (and a year after the Advent Children movie). While it’s not necessarily a must-play Final Fantasy title (it wasn’t particularly memorable for me), dedicated fans might be interested in seeing how the story progresses.
Over the past few months, Ever Crisis has been retelling the story of Dirge of Cerberus with a turn-based gameplay style. Instead of releasing the entire story at once, Square Enix divided it into parts. The first part, Arising Crisis, covered the beginning of the game up to the Arch Azul boss. The second, Breaking Chains, took players up to the fight with Nero the Sable. Now, the final chapter, Chaos Collides, is available, along with new items and gear for the character Vincent.
Now, players who never got to play Dirge of Cerberus on PlayStation 2 will finally be able to experience the full story. Just be aware that it will only be available in Ever Crisis until June 24th.
With the conclusion of this story arc in Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis, a significant chapter closes for fans. But don’t worry, there’s still much more to come to the game this year and in the future, including new stories, special events, and plenty of content to enjoy. While a remake of Dirge of Cerberus seems unlikely, Ever Crisis offers the next best experience for Final Fantasy 7 enthusiasts.
