Just a year ago, MobLand seemed poised for success. It was a huge hit for Paramount+, achieving the record for the biggest series launch at the time (later surpassed by the Yellowstone spin-off, Dutton Ranch), and received generally positive reviews (77% on Rotten Tomatoes). The series boasted a strong cast including Tom Hardy, Pierce Brosnan, and Helen Mirren, and several episodes were directed by Guy Ritchie. Renewed for a second season in June 2025, it appeared likely to follow in the footsteps of Taylor Sheridan’s popular shows on the platform.
Just a few weeks ago, the future of MobLand looked bright. The show was on schedule to return in late 2026, and there were no apparent problems. Then, unexpectedly, news broke that Tom Hardy had been fired because of his behavior on set – including disagreements with the show’s creator, Jez Butterworth, and unauthorized changes to the script. Since then, the story has quickly escalated, and here’s the latest on seasons 2 and 3, and what this means for Tom Hardy’s involvement.
Tom Hardy Has Not Been Fired From MobLand

Recent reports that Tom Hardy was fired from MobLand are incorrect, according to Variety. A source close to the production said that Hardy wasn’t fired and there’s still a possibility he’ll return for Season 3 as creative issues are being resolved. Another source mentioned that Guy Ritchie, who has worked with Hardy since 2008’s RockNRolla, may be involved in efforts to keep him on the show.
What Are The Reported Issues With Tom Hardy On MobLand’s Set?

Although reports claim he hasn’t been fired, Variety confirms the original issues reported by Puck, including disagreements between Tom Hardy and the producers, his rewriting of scenes, and tardiness on set. Previously, The Hollywood Reporter said Hardy would sometimes stay in his trailer for hours during Season 2 filming, causing Helen Mirren and Pierce Brosnan to wait. However, Variety also notes that sources indicate problems existed on both sides, and everyone involved is trying to resolve them.
Industry insiders say issues on the project stemmed from screenwriter Butterworth consistently providing scripts with very little lead time – often only a week or so before filming began. This was problematic because Tom Hardy prefers a longer preparation period. Adding to the difficulties, sources claim Butterworth was frequently absent from the set or unreachable, preventing him from addressing Hardy’s script concerns. However, one source contradicted this claim, stating Butterworth was available when needed.
The issues seemed to be less noticeable in episodes directed by Ritchie, likely because of his good working relationship with Tom Hardy and his ability to confidently make changes to the script. However, other directors without that same level of authority often struggled more with these problems.
The Status Of MobLand Season 2

Fortunately, the production of MobLand Season 2 doesn’t seem to be seriously impacted. Filming finished a few months ago, meaning most of Chris Hardy’s work is already done. Variety reports that some planned reshoots are scheduled, which is normal for most productions, but continued legal issues could cause delays. Currently, there’s no confirmed release date for the new season; Season 1 aired between March 30th and June 1st, and it’s unlikely the next season will follow the same schedule.
I’m really excited Paramount+ dropped Dutton Ranch! It’s nine episodes long, so I’m guessing we’ll see MobLand come out after that, maybe to give things some breathing room from all the current issues. And honestly, if Thomas Hardy ends up leaving or getting fired, it’s going to be a big problem for Season 2. He’s definitely the biggest draw for the show, so promoting it without him would be tough, and they’d probably have to redo a lot of scenes!
What Have Helen Mirren & Pierce Brosnan Said?

I’ve been following the news about Tom Hardy, and it’s been a bit worrying. Pierce Brosnan hasn’t said anything publicly yet, but Helen Mirren has! There was a lot of talk about a disagreement between her and Tom contributing to the issues on set, but she’s basically said that’s not true. She posted a really sweet picture of him on Instagram with a message saying, ‘Love you now and always helen.’ It’s good to see her supporting him like that.
Before this, sources at Variety had also dismissed talk of a disagreement, suggesting the actress was likely just annoyed by Hardy’s tendency to be late, but that was all.
MobLand Season 3 Hasn’t Been Officially Confirmed
Despite rumors that Hardy won’t be back for Season 3 of MobLand, a renewal hasn’t actually been confirmed yet. This means Paramount+ could decide to end the series after Season 2, but current indications suggest they’re hoping for more. The show performed well for the streaming service, so a third season seemed likely. A source at Variety believes the show could continue even without Hardy if they can’t reach an agreement.
The show features the powerful Harrigan crime family and a strong cast, including Paddy Considine alongside Helen Mirren and Pierce Brosnan. While the acting is excellent across the board, Tom Hardy was a standout in the first season and the character viewers really connected with. With no plans to replace him, his departure would significantly alter the show. Hopefully, any issues can be resolved so MobLand can continue successfully.
MobLand Season 1 is available to stream on Paramount+.
